Residents of Ureje, a suburb nestled within the bustling Ado Ekiti metropolis of Ekiti State, found themselves enveloped in fear yesterday as news of a disturbing discovery spread like wildfire.
Awakening to the sight of a lifeless body, suspected to be that of a motorcyclist, submerged in the waters of Ureje River, the community was gripped with a sense of dread.
Governor Biodun Oyebanji wasted no time in responding to the distressing situation. Mobilizing a delegation to the scene, swift action was taken to recover the deceased.
Accompanied by a team of government officials, led by Deputy Governor Chief Monisade Afuye, the grim task of supervising the retrieval of the body unfolded along the Ado-Ijan-Ikare Road.
Speaking on behalf of the government, Chief Afuye expressed deep concern over the tragic incident. Preliminary assessments suggested that the victim likely succumbed to drowning during Friday's torrential downpour, which inundated several parts of the state.
Assurances were given that a thorough investigation, in collaboration with security agencies, would be conducted to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the untimely demise.
Identifying materials, including an Automated Teller Machine (ATM) card, discovered on the deceased, will aid in efforts to locate and inform the victim's family of the tragedy.
In light of this distressing event, Chief Afuye reiterated the government's commitment to implementing robust measures aimed at mitigating flooding risks and safeguarding the well-being of citizens and their properties.
