In a significant development, nine of the abducted female students from the Federal University in Gusau, Zamfara State, have regained their freedom, providing a ray of hope amidst the lingering trauma of the abduction incident.
The abduction, which occurred on September 22, 2023, saw suspected terrorists raiding off-campus hostels at Sabon Gidan Community, near the Federal University, Gusau, and abducting a total of twenty-four female students. Alongside the students, three male labourers registered with GUPRAN Engineering Services Ltd were also taken captive.
However, within less than 72 hours of the abduction, the swift response of the Nigerian Army led to the rescue of 13 victims, including the abducted labourers, leaving the fate of the remaining captives uncertain.
Jacob Hassan, father of Naomi, one of the students still in captivity, confirmed the latest development during a telephone conversation with AIT News, signaling a glimmer of hope for the families of the remaining hostages.
The freed students have reportedly been transported to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), where they are undergoing medical treatment at an undisclosed hospital. This development comes amidst reports that the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, played a pivotal role in the negotiation process leading to their release.
In a heartening turn of events, some of the released students have been able to communicate with their parents, providing a sense of relief and reassurance to their families. Family members of Nasira and Zainab, two of the rescued students, have also confirmed their safe return, signaling a step towards healing and recovery for the affected families.
As efforts continue to secure the release of the remaining captives, the news of the freed students offers a glimmer of hope and underscores the importance of concerted efforts to combat insecurity and safeguard the lives of citizens across the nation.
