In a significant crackdown on drug-related activities, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has reported the destruction of a substantial quantity of cannabis sativa, commonly known as Indian hemp, in Edo State. The agency's spokesman, Femi Babafemi, disclosed this latest development in a statement released on Sunday from the capital city of Abuja.

The operation, conducted in the Amahor waterside forest situated in the Igueben area of Edo State, resulted in the incineration of approximately 3,065.255 kilograms of the illicit substance. Babafemi highlighted that the operation also led to the apprehension of three suspects identified as James Thankgod, Wisdom James, and Akpa Festus on Thursday, March 28.

In a parallel operation, NDLEA operatives seized 278 kilograms of cannabis en route to Idoani in Ondo State during a raid on the Oloma-Okpe forest in the Akoko-Edo Local Government Area of Edo State. Additionally, a significant seizure of 127.5 kilograms of cannabis was intercepted along the Isua/Kabba road in the Idoani area of Ose Local Government Area, Ondo State. The illicit substance was concealed in a Volkswagen Vento saloon car bearing the registration NTT 215 AA.

Amidst these interceptions, the NDLEA made strides in apprehending individuals involved in the illegal drug trade. One such arrest involved a 30-year-old female suspect named Chinasa Christopher, who was found in possession of 400 bottles of codeine syrup in the Sabon Gari area of Kano State.

Further, the agency's proactive measures led to the arrest of Bakura Goni, the owner of a consignment of illicit drugs intercepted along the Zaria-Kano road. Goni was apprehended at the Mile 2 market in Lagos on Tuesday, March 26, and subsequently flown to Kano to face charges. The intercepted consignment, comprising cannabis and tramadol with a combined weight of 73.8 kilograms, was being transported from Lagos to Kano.

These concerted efforts by the NDLEA underscore the agency's commitment to combatting drug trafficking and abuse across the country, with a focus on interdicting illicit substances at their source and bringing perpetrators to justice.
