As the emirship dispute in Kano persists, reinstated Emir Muhammad Sanusi II and deposed Emir Aminu Ado Bayero led separate Eid el-Kabir prayers in different locations across the state on Sunday.
Emir Sanusi II, joined by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, conducted prayers inside the Kofar Mata Juma’at Mosque due to inclement weather. Meanwhile, Emir Bayero performed prayers at the Nassarawa Mini Palace Mosque.
In a bold move following the prayers, Emir Sanusi II proceeded to Gidan Shettima Palace at Kofar Kwaru, where he held a mini durbar, directly defying the Kano State Police Command's earlier ban on the event.
Governor Yusuf, having participated in the two-unit prayers behind Emir Sanusi II, urged Kano's residents to maintain calm and peace while conducting their daily activities. He also mentioned that the police did not consult him before imposing the ban on the durbar, which the police justified as a measure for maintaining peace and security.
Former commissioner Ahmad Yakasai, who prayed alongside Emir Bayero, expressed his gratitude for the peace prevailing in the state despite the ongoing emirship conflict.
Following the prayers, Emir Sanusi II led the traditional Sallah durbar, riding on horseback through the streets of Wambai, Zage, Yan Damadan, and Shahuci before returning to the palace in a grand procession. The usual Eid ground was inaccessible due to flooding, prompting the alternate route.
The event saw heavy security presence and was attended by Governor Yusuf and other cabinet members, underscoring the significance of the celebration amidst the political tensions in Kano.
