Samuel Ogazi, an 18-year-old Nigerian sprinter, has achieved a historic milestone by qualifying for the semi-finals of the 400m event at the Olympic Games with a personal best time of 44.50 seconds.
Ogazi's remarkable performance not only secured his place in the semi-finals but also marked the first time a Nigerian male athlete has advanced to this stage in the 400m event since 2008. His achievement brings back memories of the last Nigerian to reach the 400m final, Sunday Bada, who competed in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.
The young athlete's impressive run earned him an automatic spot in the semi-finals, where he aims to become the first Nigerian in 28 years to reach the 400m final. Ogazi's strong finishing ability has garnered praise, with many expecting him to improve his time in the upcoming semi-final race.
In the same 400m event, Ogazi’s compatriot Chidi Okezie narrowly missed an automatic semi-final berth, finishing fourth in his heat with a time of 45.52 seconds. However, Okezie will have another opportunity to advance through the Repechage Round on Monday morning.
Sunday’s heats also saw impressive performances from other athletes, including Michael Norman of the USA, who clocked the fastest time of the day at 44.10 seconds. Zambia's Muzala Samukonga and Botswana’s Busang Kebinatshipi and Bayopo Ndori also secured their places in the semi-finals with notable runs.
