Seven individuals have been detained by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) in Ilorin following violent incidents linked to a protest over fuel price hikes.
The arrests occurred on Thursday, September 5, 2024, after the suspects allegedly attacked Olusegun Taiwo, a motorcyclist, in the Sango-Kulende area of Ilorin. According to reports, Taiwo was en route to her office when the group forcibly seized her bag, phone, and other valuables.
NSCDC spokesperson Ayoola Michael Shola confirmed the incident, stating that Taiwo filed a complaint of criminal conspiracy and theft at the NSCDC station. The suspects, identified as part of a larger group of hoodlums, were apprehended for their roles in the attack and for inciting public disorder.
Shola explained that the protest, organized by commercial tricycle and motorcycle riders, was overtaken by the suspects, who used the unrest to commit theft. This exploitation of the protest led to heightened tensions in the city.
NSCDC Commandant Dr. Umar Mohammed reassured the public of the agency’s commitment to maintaining order and addressing criminal activities. He confirmed that the suspects will face legal action in court.
