The Delta State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of two women and a group of vigilantes in connection with the brutal assault of a 20-year-old truck pusher, who was set on fire after being falsely accused of theft.
The incident, which occurred on the evening of September 12, 2024, in Sapele, involved the victim, identified as Abubakar Yusuf. Yusuf was reportedly attacked and severely beaten after being accused by Mrs. Onoriode of stealing 400,000 naira from her lockup store at Sapele Market. Following the assault, the vigilantes allegedly poured fuel on Yusuf and set him ablaze.
According to eyewitnesses, the violence against Yusuf was initiated by Onoriode, who had accused him of theft and subsequently enlisted the help of local vigilantes. After the brutal attack, it was revealed that Onoriode's sister had actually taken the money for safekeeping from the lockup store.
Fortunately, Good Samaritans intervened and rescued Yusuf, who sustained burns to his head, feet, and hands. Following his rescue, Yusuf was taken to a local chemist for initial treatment and later discharged.
Human rights activists, led by Comrade Kingsley Imode, intervened in the case, bringing it to the attention of the police. A police source confirmed to the Vanguard that the two women involved and the vigilante group have been apprehended.
“We have arrested two women and the vigilante team responsible for this heinous act. We are committed to a thorough investigation, and justice will be served,” the police source stated.
Yusuf is currently receiving further medical care at Sapele Central Hospital. The police are continuing their investigation into the case.
