Jeremiah Paul, a 20-year-old bricklayer, has confessed to the brutal murder of 19-year-old Damilola Olowoyo, a first-year student at the Federal University Lokoja. Paul, who was paraded alongside three other suspects by the Kogi State Police Command on Friday, September 13, 2024, admitted to killing Olowoyo as part of a money ritual.
The police, led by Public Relations Officer SP William Ovye Aya, revealed that Paul lured Olowoyo into a secluded area under the guise of a friendly encounter. Paul had initially pretended to be interested in Olowoyo before drugging her with a concoction of codeine and Sprite. Once she was incapacitated, he transported her to an unfinished building where he strangled her to death and dismembered her body, removing several organs and body parts for ritual purposes.
Paul, who had previously contacted a native doctor he met on TikTok, had demanded a ransom from Olowoyo's family. He collected N400,000 before killing her. Following the murder, Paul and his accomplices, Emmanuel Otitoju, Banabas Olugbenga, and Ajayi Basit Ayomide, were apprehended. Paul’s confession included details about how he and a friend from Kaduna State had carried out the crime under the direction of the native doctor, who sent ritual items via a driver from Ibadan.
SP Aya emphasized the gravity of the crime and warned the public, especially students, to be cautious about their associations. “This case is a stark reminder of the extreme measures some individuals will take under the guise of ritual practices,” Aya stated. “Students and the general public must be vigilant about the people they interact with and their intentions.”
The police have vowed to pursue justice vigorously and warned criminals that Kogi State will not be a safe haven for such acts. The suspects will be formally charged once investigations are complete.
