The Imo State Police Command has responded to a viral video circulating on social media, depicting a confrontation during the arrest of a young man. In a statement released on September 21, the command acknowledged the incident and assured the public that they are committed to investigating the matter thoroughly while maintaining law and order in the state.
According to the spokesperson of the command, ASP Henry Okoye, the altercation occurred on September 16 during an operation carried out by four officers from the Anti-Narcotics unit. The officers—Sgt Patrick Nwangbo, Cpl God’swill Okechukwu, Cpl Justice Nnorom, and Cpl Goodluck Iwuagwu—were executing an arrest warrant for 32-year-old Prince Amaechi in Ovoro-Uzomiri Umuosu, Naze, Owerri North Local Government Area. Amaechi was allegedly linked to a case of conspiracy and drug trafficking based on confessions from previously arrested suspects, Ijeoma Ezealamba and Ebenezer Chukwuka.
During the operation, Amaechi reportedly resisted arrest, leading to the altercation seen in the video. The police command condemned the conduct of the officers involved, stating that the situation should have been handled with greater professionalism.
The officers have since been taken into custody for interrogation, and the Commissioner of Police has ordered that the case be transferred to the IGP X-Squad in Imo State for a comprehensive investigation. In the meantime, the officers will undergo an orderly room trial pending the outcome of the investigation.
ASP Okoye urged the public to remain calm and refrain from spreading misinformation as the investigation continues.
