
A 21-year-old scavenger, Dauda Saidu, has been arrested by the Bauchi State Police Command for allegedly desecrating a Christian cemetery and stealing iron rods. The arrest was made on September 20, 2024, following reports of trespassing and vandalism at the Yelwa Christian Cemetery in Bauchi.
Police spokesperson, Ahmed Wakil, revealed in a statement on Sunday that Saidu unlawfully entered the cemetery, damaged several graves, and stole iron rods in broad daylight. During interrogation, the suspect confessed to the crime, admitting that he had sold the stolen rods in separate transactions for ₦9,500, ₦12,000, and ₦5,500. Saidu further disclosed that the proceeds were used to purchase Indian hemp and food for personal consumption.
Bauchi Police Commissioner Auwal Musa Muhammad has directed that Saidu be prosecuted following the completion of investigations. In his statement, Muhammad also emphasized the importance of parental supervision, urging parents and guardians to monitor their children closely to prevent such criminal behavior.
The incident has sparked outrage, with many in the community condemning the act of desecrating graves for profit.
