The Nigerian Navy's Operation DELTA SANITY has achieved significant milestones in its ongoing campaign against crude oil theft and maritime crime in the Niger Delta region. The Navy announced the arrest of eight suspected oil thieves and the destruction of several illegal refineries in a series of operations carried out throughout September 2024.
Commodore A. Adams-Aliu, Director of Information at the Naval Headquarters, confirmed the success of the operations in a statement, detailing the efforts of Navy troops in various communities across Bayelsa, Rivers, Delta, Ondo, and Akwa Ibom states.
On September 4, 2024, three wooden boats and one speedboat filled with stolen crude oil and illegally refined Automated Gas Oil (AGO) were seized near the Brass River, Nembe, and Botokiri community in Bayelsa State. The following day, Navy operatives dismantled two illegal refinery sites and destroyed two wooden boats laden with stolen crude oil in the Bonny Channel area of Rivers State.
Additional operations on September 9 targeted illegal refining sites at Okporoza Creek in Delta State, where two active sites were dismantled, along with the seizure of one wooden boat and several dugout pits used for crude oil theft. The Navy continued its crackdown, uncovering a newly constructed illegal refinery in Ondo State on September 10.
