Samuel Ortom, the immediate past governor of Benue State, has announced that he has received a divine message instructing him not to contest in the upcoming 2027 elections. Ortom made this revelation during a courtesy visit from members of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) G-14 in Makurdi on Tuesday.

Quote
“I’ll respect God’s wish; He has told me not to contest the election in 2027,”
Ortom stated, affirming his commitment to follow what he perceives as divine guidance regarding his political future. The G-14 members are senior figures within the PDP from the 14 Tiv-speaking local government areas of Benue.

Ortom expressed that he felt compelled to honor this divine directive, emphasizing the importance of faith and obedience in his decision-making. He reflected on his previous electoral defeat, admitting that he failed to seek divine consultation before entering the 2023 election, which he believes contributed to his loss.

“I knew why I lost the election in 2023. I didn’t consult God. My people purchased the forms for me, and I accepted them without consulting God,” he explained. “God has revealed everything to me. He has asked me to wait for him.”

During his tenure as governor, Ortom noted that he made significant personal sacrifices, often prioritizing state matters over family and friendships. He pledged his continued support for the PDP, insisting that individual ambitions should not outweigh the party’s interests.

Following his exit from office, Ortom had planned to take a sabbatical, but he revealed that the elders of the party encouraged him to remain active. He asserted that no one, including himself, possesses the authority to disband the influential G-14 group, which serves as the elders’ forum of the PDP in Benue.

“As the leader of the party in the state, I lack the powers to dissolve the group. So nobody can disband this group,” he stated. Ortom emphasized that any significant changes within the party would require his prior knowledge as its leader.

On the upcoming congresses, Ortom announced that the national secretariat has approved the ward and local government congresses, with the state congress scheduled for October 3rd. He indicated that he has engaged with party senators, including Gabriel Suswam and Abba Moro, to encourage a consensus approach in the opposition.

Dr. Laha Dzever, Chairman of the PDP G-14, voiced full support for Ortom’s leadership, reiterating their commitment to fostering peace and unity within the party. He acknowledged that while disagreements may arise in politics, such internal squabbles ultimately strengthen the party.

“The only person that can disband us is the leader of the party in the state, and that is Chief Ortom. You alone can only disband what you have formed,”[/I] Dzever affirmed, underscoring the G-14’s historical significance in maintaining the party's unity since its formation in 2015.
