In a coordinated operation, the Enugu Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested 44 individuals suspected of engaging in internet fraud across various locations in Enugu and Anambra States.

The arrests, which took place in the early hours of Saturday and Sunday, September 28 and 29, 2024, were made following actionable intelligence linking the suspects to online criminal activities. According to the EFCC, the suspects were involved in fraudulent schemes using social media platforms such as Instagram and Facebook to defraud unsuspecting victims.

Preliminary investigations revealed that some of the suspects used fake identities to establish romantic relationships with foreign nationals to defraud them, while others were found with fraudulent documents stored on their devices.

In the operation, several laptops and sophisticated mobile phones were seized from the suspects.

The EFCC stated, "The suspects will be charged to court once investigations are concluded."

This development is part of the EFCC's ongoing efforts to clamp down on cybercrime in the country.
