Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have arrested Oguejiofor Simonpeter, a Nigerian returning from Thailand, for attempting to smuggle 13.30kg of heroin worth over N3.192 billion into the country. The arrest was made at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, on October 7, 2024.
According to a statement by NDLEA spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, the suspect concealed the drugs inside six backpacks, which were packed into two large suitcases. Oguejiofor had left Thailand on October 3 aboard a Qatar Airways flight, with a stopover in Doha. His final destination was Accra, Ghana, but he rerouted his luggage to Nigeria after arriving in Lagos on October 5, in an attempt to evade security checks.
NDLEA officers intercepted Oguejiofor at the airport, and a thorough search of his luggage revealed that each suitcase contained three empty backpacks, with large parcels of heroin expertly sewn into them. The six parcels were recovered, with a total weight of 13.30kg.
During interrogation, Oguejiofor admitted that he was promised $7,000 to transport the drugs to both Nigeria and Ghana. He was to deliver two parcels in Lagos and the remaining four in Accra.
The NDLEA has vowed to continue its crackdown on drug trafficking, especially at key entry points like international airports.
