The Jigawa State Police Command has arrested a 26-year-old man, Nura Mas’ud, for allegedly setting his grandmother, Zuwaira Muhammad, ablaze. The tragic incident occurred in Mu’azu village, Dan Gwanki ward, Sule Tankarkar Local Government Area.
Public Relations Officer for the command, DSP Lawan Adam, confirmed the arrest in a statement issued on Saturday. He reported that police received notification of the incident on October 8, 2024, at approximately 4:00 PM.
According to Adam, Mas’ud arrived at his family home with a petrol canister, dousing his grandmother with the fuel before igniting it. The elderly woman sustained severe burns and later succumbed to her injuries while receiving treatment at a local hospital. A medical professional declared her dead, and her remains were returned to the family for burial in accordance with Islamic customs.
A team of detectives from the Sule Tankarkar Division promptly apprehended Mas’ud and transferred him to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further inquiry. During questioning, he reportedly confessed to the crime.
Preliminary investigations have suggested that Mas’ud suffers from mental illness and had been undergoing treatment at Kazaure Psychiatric Hospital. He allegedly stated that he was provoked by his grandmother’s comments about his health and appearance, which he found upsetting despite having warned her multiple times.
Jigawa State Commissioner of Police A.T. Abdullahi has directed the SCID to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the case and ensure that the suspect is prosecuted, serving as a warning to deter similar offenses in the future.
