The Cross River State Police Command has apprehended six suspected Ambazonian rebels following their invasion of Akamkpa Local Government Area. The Command's spokesperson, DSP Ewa Igri, confirmed the arrest during a briefing with journalists in Calabar on Saturday.
The arrests are considered a significant breakthrough, with the detained individuals currently under interrogation. The suspects, aged between 18 and 36, were reportedly apprehended with various weapons, improvised explosive devices, charms, and flags associated with Ambazonia, the self-proclaimed state formed by separatist groups in Cameroon’s Anglophone regions.
Ambazonia, declared by English-speaking separatists, includes the Northwest and Southwest Regions of Cameroon. Since 2017, Ambazonian rebels have been in armed conflict with the Cameroonian military, known as the Anglophone Crisis. The separatists, who have set up governments-in-exile, control parts of the claimed territory with the support of local militias.
DSP Igri revealed that the suspects were detained after a tip-off and intelligence gathering, with three suspects initially arrested on October 10, leading to the capture of three more. Recovered items included a GPMG machine gun, an AK-47 rifle, multiple empty magazines, bulletproof gear, and an Ambazonian army stamp.
The case has since been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for further investigation and prosecution.
