The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has announced the arrest of businessman Ihejirika Okechukwu Emmanuel at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Ikeja, Lagos, for allegedly attempting to import and export cocaine. The arrest occurred on Tuesday, October 15, 2024, as he prepared to board an Ethiopian Airlines flight to Thailand with a layover in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Femi Babafemi, the Director of Media and Advocacy at NDLEA Headquarters in Abuja, confirmed the details in a statement released on Sunday. According to the agency, a body scan revealed that Ihejirika had ingested a significant amount of illicit drugs, identified as cocaine. Following the scan, he was placed under medical observation, during which he expelled five large wraps of the drug, totaling 400 grams.

The 51-year-old suspect reportedly confessed that he was promised a payment upon the successful delivery of the cocaine to Thailand. He explained that he intended to use the money to support his fish importation business.

The NDLEA's efforts to combat drug trafficking continue as they remain vigilant at major transit points to prevent the smuggling of illegal substances into and out of the country.
