
A tragic incident has unfolded in Idanre Local Government Area of Ondo State, where a labourer, Sunday Emmanuel, allegedly attacked his wife, Linda, with a machete, resulting in her death. The incident reportedly took place on October 7 at Ogbeni Camp in the Ofosu area of Idanre. Emmanuel is also accused of inflicting serious head injuries on his 3-year-old son, identified as Sunday, in what police describe as an attempted murder.
According to a police report, the altercation between Emmanuel and his wife reportedly stemmed from a dispute over the use of their annual earnings. Following his arrest, Emmanuel was arraigned at an Ondo State magistrates’ court, facing charges of murder and attempted murder.
The police prosecutor, Josephine Awanna, detailed the charges, stating that Emmanuel unlawfully killed his wife by striking her on the neck and cheek with a machete, while also attempting to kill his young son. The charges are based on sections 319(1) and 320(1) of the Ondo State Criminal Code Laws.
Due to the severity of the charges, Magistrate Olateju Odenusi-Fadeyi ordered Emmanuel’s remand at the Nigerian Correctional Service facility, pending a review from the Department of Public Prosecutions (DPP). The court has adjourned the case for mention until February 2, 2025.
