Controversial Nigerian crossdresser Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, may soon face new criminal charges following accusations that he bribed officials to avoid strict penalties during his recent prison sentence. An investigative panel, set up by the Minister of Interior, has recommended that Bobrisky face defamation and potential bribery charges, alleging he tarnished the reputation of Nigeria’s correctional services with false claims.

Bobrisky, sentenced to six months in April for currency abuse, allegedly claimed in a leaked audio recording that he paid N15 million to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to dismiss money laundering charges and bribed correctional officers to serve his sentence in a private apartment. These accusations surfaced shortly after his release in August, when social critic Martins Otse, known as VeryDarkMan, publicized the voice recording.

In response to the claims, a panel chaired by Interior Ministry Permanent Secretary Magdalena Ajani found no evidence that Bobrisky served his sentence outside the Kirikiri Custodial Centre. However, the report suggested the Department of State Services (DSS) investigate the bribery allegations and pursue charges if evidence of corruption emerges.

The panel's findings have also prompted recommendations for disciplinary action against four senior correctional officers, including former Controller of Corrections Ben Rabbi-Freeman, who allegedly facilitated improper transfers for Bobrisky without required documentation. Other implicated officers, such as Deputy Controller Michael Anugwa and retired DCC Balogun Sikiru, face similar accusations regarding irregular procedures and backdated transfer documents.

The report further urged the correctional service to file defamation suits under the Criminal Code Act against Bobrisky for allegedly making false statements that undermine the agency’s credibility.

In addition, the panel recommended comprehensive reforms, including a national audit of all custodial records, demilitarization of inmate support services, and expanding non-custodial sentencing to help decongest Nigerian prisons.

The Interior Ministry's panel findings and recommendations have sparked public debate on corruption in Nigeria’s correctional system, highlighting urgent calls for transparency and accountability.
