The Nigerian Army has announced a significant victory in its ongoing counter-terrorism operations, capturing a notorious terrorist leader, Abubakar Ibrahim, also known as Habu Dogo, in the North West. This arrest, along with numerous other successful operations, showcases a marked weakening of terrorist networks and oil theft rings across the country.
In a statement released on Saturday by Director of Defence Media Operations, Edward Buba, it was confirmed that Habu Dogo, a high-profile target wanted in both Nigeria and the Niger Republic for cross-border terrorism, was apprehended in Rumji Village, Illela Local Government Area of Sokoto State. His capture is hailed as a major breakthrough in countering insurgency activities in the region.
Additionally, in a parallel operation in the South East, troops detained seven commanders and operatives affiliated with the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its militant arm, Eastern Security Network (ESN). The arrested individuals include Dr. Nnamdi Chukwudoze, Chigozie Ezetoha, Ngozi Chukwuka, and Oyekachi Ohia, with arrests spanning from Anambra to Abia and Imo states.
The Army’s report highlighted that recent efforts led to the neutralization of 187 insurgents and the arrest of 262 suspects across various regions. In addition, 147 kidnapped hostages were rescued, and 39 suspects involved in oil theft were taken into custody. The Army estimated that efforts to disrupt oil theft prevented losses of up to N1.2 billion in the South-South region.
The military recovered a large cache of weapons and ammunition, totaling 205 assorted firearms and 5,241 rounds of ammunition, including G3 rifles, PKT guns, and AK-47 rifles. Additional items seized included 29 motorcycles, six vehicles, and 55 mobile phones.
In the Niger Delta, security forces discovered and dismantled 98 illegal refining sites, along with 49 crude oil cooking ovens and 72 boats used in the illegal trade. In total, troops confiscated over 1 million liters of stolen crude oil and 873,510 liters of illegally refined automotive gas oil.
These operations underscore the Nigerian Army’s continued commitment to combating terrorism and organized crime, with military officials assuring the public of ongoing efforts to secure peace and stability across the nation.
