In a significant breakthrough, the Ogun State Police Command has apprehended a seven-member gang accused of orchestrating kidnappings along the Sagamu/Ijebu-Ode expressway. Commissioner of Police Abiodun Alamutu announced the arrests during a press briefing on Friday, November 1, 2024, at the command's headquarters in Abeokuta.

The gang, led by 42-year-old Azeez Abolaji Alese, comprises six other suspects: Onokrese Jacob (34), Henry Gaga Emmanuel (34), Joseph Udomah (42), Abiola Oduyemi (41), Abbey Emmanuel (34), and Jimoh Kareem (39). They are believed to be responsible for the abduction of seven individuals between May and September 2024.

The investigation into the gang began following a lead on October 3, which led the police's anti-kidnapping unit to Oduyemi’s hideout in Egbeda, Ibadan, where he was arrested along with other principal members. CP Alamutu detailed several incidents attributed to the gang, including a kidnapping on May 16, when they targeted Busari Abiola in Sagamu, stealing her unregistered 2009 Corolla after her abduction.

The following day, the gang struck again in Ijebu Ode, abducting Adebayo Olabisi from her Highlander Jeep. A string of similar incidents continued, with the gang allegedly abducting Omosehin Tanwa on June 2 and Segun Adebanjo on July 14. The most recent known attack occurred on September 5, targeting nurse Uruakpa Elizabeth as she returned home from work.

During the investigation, Oduyemi was found in possession of items linking him to the kidnappings, including a branded key holder from Babcock University. Upon interrogation, he confessed to his involvement and provided crucial information that led to the identification and subsequent arrests of his accomplices.

The police have described Azeez Abolaji Alese as the gang's leader and recruiter, who relied on talismans to guide his operations. He has a history of criminal activity, previously arrested for kidnapping an expatriate in 2016 and later for the abduction of two women in Ibadan. Despite being released on bail in April 2024, Alese quickly regrouped and resumed his criminal activities.

Among the seized items are a Browning pistol, a Helement Jeep, a Toyota Camry, various school bags, and the Babcock University key holder. The police also revealed that other members of the gang played specific roles, including procurement of arms and supplies for the kidnapped victims.

This successful operation highlights the ongoing commitment of the Ogun State Police to combatting kidnapping and violent crime in the region, as they continue to investigate the gang’s activities and seek justice for the victims.
