The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has arrested approximately 130 foreign nationals, primarily Chinese and Malaysians, in connection with alleged high-level cybercrimes, hacking activities, and threats to national security. The arrests took place during a coordinated raid in the Jahi area of Abuja, following an investigation into suspected criminal activities involving sophisticated technology.
According to a statement released on Sunday by Force spokesperson Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the operation led to the apprehension of 87 male and 26 female foreigners, along with 17 Nigerian suspects. The raid was conducted at a building near the Next Cash and Carry area, where the individuals reportedly used computers and advanced equipment to carry out the alleged cybercrimes.
Assistant Inspector-General of Police for Zone 7 Headquarters, AIG Benneth Igweh, spearheaded the operation on Saturday, November 3, 2024. Officers from the NPF Zone 7 Command Abuja and the National Cyber Crime Centre (NPF-NCCC) participated in the raid, seizing several devices for further examination.
“We are currently investigating the matter and conducting scientific analysis of the recovered exhibits,” Adejobi stated. “Upon the conclusion of our investigation, the suspects will be formally charged in court.”
The NPF’s operation underscores a commitment to combat cyber-related crimes amid rising security concerns associated with foreign-led cyber activities in Nigeria.
