The Nigerian Senate has summoned the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, alongside the Director-General of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), airline operators, and other stakeholders.

This move follows the increasing frequency of flight delays and cancellations in the country.

Senator AbdulFatai Buhari (All Progressives Congress, Oyo North), who sponsored the motion, expressed concern over the disruptions, emphasizing that air travel is crucial for business, official purposes, and time-sensitive appointments.

“This development is worrisome as air travel is one of the most reliable, dependable, and quicker means of transportation, often undertaken for business/official purposes and to keep other scheduled appointments, which are usually time-bo,” he said.

He further noted that the delays and cancellations are detrimental to the socio-economic growth of the country.

Buhari also highlighted that despite the existence of regulations providing consumer protection in the aviation sector, enforcement remains a challenge.

According to him, Nigerians are unaware that they are entitled to compensation for time lost due to unnecessary delays.

He added, “However, enforcement has been an issue as most Nigerians are not even aware that they are entitled to compensation for time lost due to unnecessary delay, hence the need for the NCAA to activate this aspect of its regulation so that airline operators will sit up and be alive to their responsibilities.”

The Senate Committee on Aviation was however charged with unraveling the circumstances behind the incessant delays and cancellations.

The Committee has also been directed to ensure that airline operators fulfill their responsibilities.
