Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his inclusive leadership, particularly towards the Igbo community.
Kalu remarked that Tinubu is the first Nigerian leader to prioritize the Ndigbo (Igbo people) in national governance since the civil war ended 54 years ago.
He further revealed that Yakubu Gowon, former military ruler, launched the three Rs programme — reconstruction, rehabilitation and reintegration — to heal and rebuild the country after the civil war which lasted from July 6, 1967 to January 13, 1970.
“The reconstruction, rehabilitation and reintegration of the south-east has just started with the establishment of the SEDC with the aim to rebuild the damage caused by the civil war will be rebuilt.”
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration has shown a deliberate effort to include individuals from diverse ethnic backgrounds, including the Igbo, in key positions. Here are some notable appointments:
Ben Akabueze: Retained as the Director-General of the Budget Office.
Ikechukwu Obiorah: Appointed as Chairman of the Revenue Mobilization Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC).
Festus Okoye: Re-appointed as a National Commissioner in the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Deputy Speaker Ben Kalu: His election as Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives is seen as a strategic political move for inclusivity.
Kalu’s comments highlight Tinubu’s efforts to bridge historical divides and ensure the representation of diverse ethnic groups in his administration. The statement has sparked conversations about Tinubu's appointments and policies, with some applauding the move as a step toward national unity, while others view it as a political strategy.
