A young man is currently battling for his life after a harrowing accident on the Dawaki-Kubwa Expressway in Abuja, allegedly caused by reckless actions of Nigerian police officers.
According to eyewitness accounts, the officers forcefully entered the victim’s vehicle without a checkpoint or prior stop order, sparking a struggle that led to the devastating crash.
The incident was brought to public attention by a social media user, Opaluwa Omera Ugbede, who shared details of the shocking event along with images from the scene.
In his post, Ugbede recounted that the victim had been sent by his mother to buy sachet water and was returning home when police officers in the area allegedly forced their way into his car. One of the officers reportedly grabbed the steering wheel, causing the vehicle to spiral out of control.
"The car somersaulted three times before plunging into a gutter," the post stated, adding that the victim suffered severe injuries, including suspected internal bleeding.
Eyewitnesses at the scene described how the young man was barely conscious before being rushed to the hospital for emergency care.
Adding to public outrage, reports indicate that instead of assisting the critically injured victim, the officers allegedly attempted to flee the scene. However, quick-thinking bystanders deflated the police vehicle’s tyres, preventing their escape and ensuring the young man received medical attention.
The incident has reignited anger over police brutality and impunity in Nigeria, with many drawing comparisons to the EndSARS protests of 2020, which sought to end police misconduct.
Despite government promises of reform following the disbandment of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), cases of excessive force, extortion, and abuse of power continue to surface, leaving many Nigerians questioning whether true accountability exists within the nation’s law enforcement agencies.
As the young man fights for his life, calls for justice grow louder, with citizens demanding that the officers involved be held accountable for their actions.
