Tension gripped residents of Bayelsa on Tuesday following a brazen daylight attack by suspected sea pirates on a passenger boat along the Lobia/Foropa Waterways in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area. The assault led to the abduction of four market women and the robbery of several other passengers.
The ill-fated boat, which had departed from the Swali Market Jetty in Yenagoa just minutes earlier, was ambushed as it journeyed through the riverine route. Eyewitness accounts reveal that all 12 passengers aboard were stripped of their personal belongings and cash before the gunmen abducted four women and disappeared into the surrounding bushland.
The chilling incident has sparked outrage across the state, with Hon. Selekaye Victor-Ben, the lawmaker representing Southern Ijaw Constituency 4 in the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, strongly condemning the act.
“This is nothing short of a cowardly and barbaric assault on innocent citizens striving to make an honest living,” Victor-Ben said in a statement. “It threatens not only the peace of our communities but also the economic lifeline of our people. I stand with the families of the victims in this distressing moment.”
Victor-Ben, who also chairs the State Assembly Committee on Human Rights, urged the Bayelsa State Government and security agencies—especially the Nigerian Police—to take immediate and decisive action to rescue the abducted women and clamp down on piracy across the state’s waterways.
This latest attack adds to the growing concern over insecurity in the riverine communities, where sea piracy has disrupted economic activities and endangered lives. Residents and local leaders are calling for increased marine patrols and long-term strategies to address the root causes of maritime crime in the Niger Delta region.
