Renowned Nollywood actress and filmmaker Funke Akindele has spoken candidly about a personal crisis that led her to seek therapy for the first time, following intense emotional distress triggered by public ridicule during her foray into politics.
In a revealing interview with media personality Chude Jideonwo, the “Battle on Buka Street” producer recalled the toll her 2023 deputy governorship campaign took on her mental health, particularly after watching a viral video where she was taunted for being unmarried.
Akindele, who contested under the banner of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos State, said the ridicule cut deep.
“I watched a video where some women were mocking me, saying I didn’t have a husband and yet I wanted to go into politics. I cried bitterly. That was when I told myself it was time to speak to a therapist,” she shared.
Despite her long-held belief in the value of mental health support, Akindele admitted she had previously resisted therapy due to fear of gossip and societal stigma.
“I always knew therapy was important, but I was afraid of being the subject of whispers. So, I kept acting like I was strong, even when they threw everything at me,” she said.
The actress, whose blockbuster films have redefined Nollywood box office success, used the platform to encourage others, especially women and public figures, to prioritize their mental health.
“Please, don’t bottle up your emotions. Speak out. Therapy helped me feel better, and it can help you too,” she advised.
Her openness has sparked a wave of support from fans and mental health advocates, who praised her for using her platform to destigmatize emotional vulnerability and promote psychological wellness.
Watching Funke Akindele talk about choosing therapy after being mocked for not having a husband really hit me.

People don’t realise how deep that kind of shame can cut. Glad she chose healing. #WithChudeLive
