Several billboards of Oyo State Governor, Chief Adebayo Alao-Akala, have been destroyed in Ogbomoso, his hometown.

The billboards of the governor located in General, Starlight, Isale-General, Oja-Tutun and Ogbomoso-Ilorin expressway bypass were destroyed during protests by students, which climaxed last Thursday

It was gathered that the students were protesting hike in tuition fees for fresh students from N40,000 to N115,000 and for pre-degree students from N50,000 to N130, 000.

In related development, a statement by some concerned parents, on Sunday, accused the Oyo Police Command of striping female LAUTECH students naked before carting them and their male counterparts into cells.

Police Commissioner, Oyo State Command, Mr Adisa Bolanta, in a telephone interview with our correspondent, on Sunday evening, said it was wrong for parents to fault the police over the arrests, stressing that it was wrong of the students to take the law into their hands.

Bolanta said, “Parents who defend destructive students are irresponsible. 63 of them were arrested and some of them were released. When they did not go on rampage did the police arrest them?”

President, Student Union Government of LAUTECH, Mr Idowu Adeniji, who spoke with our correspondent, in Osogbo, on Sunday, alleged that he was kidnapped by unknown gunmen at Nigeria Union of Teachers Plaza, Alata area of Ogbomoso, on February 28.

Adeniji, who said he was released on the March 8, explained that he could not recognise the building where he was held captive by his abductors because he was blindfolded when he was taken in and out of the building.

The management of the institution, however, announced the suspension of Adeniji, last week, for allegedly leading the students out in protest.

But, the billboards of Action Congress of Nigeria’s candidate for Oyo-Central senatorial candidate, Mr Ayo Adeseun, who is the incumbent Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Appropriation, were not destroyed.

The students had clashed with commercial motorcyclists in the town last Wednesday, leading to an escalation of the crisis on Thursday.

Adeniji said, “Many female students were stripped naked by the police and beaten black and blue by the police, who forced them into vehicles and took them to Iyangaku police station in Ibadan.”

Meanwhile, the Osun State government has condemned the Oyo State government for attempting to appoint a substantive vice chancellor and registrar for the troubled institution.

A statement by the Director, Osun State Bureau of Communication and Strategy, Mr Semiu Okanlawon, on Sunday, said LAUTECH remained the joint heritage of Osun and Oyo states, stressing that the Alao-Akala government could not take over the institution.

He deserves what he got for increasing the tuition fees when things are tight financially for everybody in the country.
