Real Madrid v Tottenham Hotspur
After a nervous 1-1 draw away at Lyon in the round of 16, Real Madrid burst into life in the home leg, winning 3-0. This means they stay unbeaten in this year’s competition with five wins and a draw comprising their six group games, winning the table by eight points.
Harry Redknapp became the first English manager to guide a team to the quarter finals of the Champions League when Spurs had a tight 1-0 win over AC Milan over two legs in the round of 16. Spurs looked like they weren’t even going to make the group stages when they went 3-0 down in their first leg play-off game at Young Boys but rallied to end up with only a 3-2 deficit and then won their home leg easily 4-0. Three wins and two draws were enough to win their group outright.
Chelsea v Manchester United
Chelsea did most of the hard work in the round of 16 when they won 2-0 away in Copenhagen, and they needed it as all they could produce at home was a dull goalless draw. Chelsea did better in their group games, topping the table with five wins out of six games.
Manchester United had a dull goalless draw away at Marseille in the round of 16 and were made to work for their 2-1 home win, not helped by a shaky defence. They did, however, only concede one goal in an unbeaten run in the group matches that saw them top the table with four wins out of six.
Barcelona v Shakhtar Donetsk
Barcelona had a scare away at Arsenal in the round of 16, throwing away a 1-0 lead to go 2-1 down, but a solid home performance saw them through 4-3 on aggregate. Barcelona were unbeaten in their group games, winning four of the six matches to top the table.
Shakhtar Donetsk had a comfortable 6-2 aggregate win over Roma in the round of 16. It was also comfortable in the group stages with five wins out of six matches. This will be their first appearance in the quarter finals.
Inter Milan v Schalke 04
Holders Inter Milan needed the away goals rule to progress against Bayern Munich in the round of 16 after losing their home leg 1-0. A 2-3 away win sealed the victory. Inter Milan could only finish second in their group to Spurs after winning three of the six games.
After earning a 1-1 draw at Valencia in the first leg of the round of 16, Schalke looked a little nervous at 2-1 in the home leg and it took an injury time strike to make the score 4-2 on aggregate. They topped their group by winning four of the six games.
