The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Sunday had at his first arraignment on March 24, pleaded guilty to the three-count charge of impersonation, fraud and stealing.
Senior Magistrate W.B. Balogun of the Igbosere Magistrates' Court, Lagos, in his judgment, sentenced him to one year imprisonment for each offence without an option of fine.
The sentences will, however, run concurrently.
The Prosecutor, Cpl. Coleman Williams, had told the court that Sunday on Nov. 3, 2010 at Olodi Apapa, stolen a complete set of police uniform.
He said the accused was on March 6 at No 79 Ajeniya Street, Obalende, arrested for impersonating a police officer by wearing the uniform with a view to duping unsuspecting members of the public.
Williams added that the accused, within the same period, collected the sum of N46,000 from one Babangida Adamu with a promise to assist in enlisting him into the Nigeria Police Force.
In his plea for mercy, Sunday accepted collecting the money, but said the police uniform was given to him by his brother. He said his joblessness forced him into the illicit act and pleaded for leniency.
In his ruling, Senior Magistrate Balogun said it had been proved beyond reasonable doubt that the accused understood the charge and its implications.
“I, therefore, sentence you to one year imprisonment on each count without option of fine and the sentences will run concurrently. “I hope the sentence will serve as deterrent to other would-be criminals in the society," he told the convict.
