FOLLOWING the arrest of a suspected drug kingpin, Ajah Philemon Osi, the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Ahmadu Giade, has assured of world-class screening at the nation's airports. The drug suspect, with a United States international passport and a business class ticket on Qatar Airways flight, was intercepted by anti-narcotics officers at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos. The 57-year-old Osi was on his way at the weekend to personally deliver 1.670kg of methamphetamine he ingested in Narita, Japan, through Doha. Giade, who described the arrest as a product of strategic planning and meticulous execution, said: "What we have at the airports at present is a world-class security control system both in terms of equipment and strategic planning by officers. Our promise to Nigerians is that all drug barons shall be exposed. This is yet another promise kept. We are confident that the airports are now impregnable to illicit drug cartels". He disclosed that investigation has commenced on the alleged complex drug networks of Osi in America, Germany, Ireland and Japan with assurance of follow-up arrests. NDLEA Airport Commander, Alhaji Hamza Umar, commended his officers for the successful search and undercover operation that led to the arrest of the high profile suspect. According to Hamza, "the officers have done a good job and the enthusiasm is palpable. The suspect has been hiding under the cover of automobile importation in trafficking narcotics. We are very happy with the arrest as his criminal admirers and accomplice will be forced to have a rethink". The suspect, Osi, who hails from Amaeze village in Ebonyi State, Nigeria, had lived in the United States for over 20 years while his wife and four children are in Ireland. He claimed to have lost several of his vehicles worth over $100,000 in the recent earthquake in Japan; a situation that forced him into drug trafficking. Anti-drug authority, however, described the car business as a ruse, warning drug trafficking cartels that the law will catch up with them. According to the suspect, who has dual citizenship of Nigeria and United States, his plan of booking a business class ticket was a deliberate strategy to shield him from suspicion and arrest. "I booked business class ticket to evade arrest. I felt terrible upon arrest. It is really sad", Osi stated. He described his arrest as a temptation that struck him at a vulnerable period of his life. His words: "It is a temptation that came to me at the wrong time in my life. We are prone to temptation but while we can resist some, others come when we are vulnerable. I lost many cars to the earthquake in Japan. My intention was to use the money from the drug trade to ship other vehicles to Nigeria for sale. I still have seven vehicles in Japan and four in Ireland".
Jesus replied, "What is impossible with men is possible with God." Luke 18:27
