National Commissioner in charge of Information and Publicity Committee (IPC), Prince Adedeji Shoyebi who took journalists to the fire incident said the fire started at about 11.20 am from one of the air conditioners in the room.
He confirmed that the fire incident was promptly put out by the staff who were around with fire extinguishers adding that it was not a serious incident because it was put off even before the in-house fire service department at the Commission could arrive the scene.
"As you can see gentlemen, the fire incident was not a serious one, it started at about 11.20 am from one of the air conditioners in the room and was promptly put off with fire extinguishers. There were no casualties and no injuries".
When Daily Champion visited the scene, the effect of the fire incident was very conspicuous as all the room including the adjourning offices were covered with charred smoke.
Curtains, doors and windows were thoroughly burnt just as all sorts of office equipment including photo copiers and computers were littered around the premises.
At least over 25 canisters of fire extinguishers were seen near the office which was said to have been under renovation before the fire incident.
Members of staff were seen in groups discussing the development which left them confused on why how the fire began.
A staff who pleaded anonymity told Daily Champion that it was good that the fire started when people were in the office arguing that with the effect and speed with which it spread, it would have been a total disaster if it had began in the night or during the weekends.
Some others believe there are more to the fire than meets the eye because a similar fire incident was said to have occurred in the same office of the INEC chairman immediately after the 2003 and 2007 elections.
