Seven students of the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria were crushed to death on Tuesday night when their bus had a head-on collision with a petrol tanker.

Witnesses said the accident occurred around 8pm on Tuesday amidst a heavy downpour at a spot close to Muhammad Aminu Square along the Samaru-Sabon Gari road.

“Nobody except the survivors can tell you how exactly how the accident happened but we arrived the scene some minutes after the accident. Five people who were identified as ABU students died on the spot while others that were seriously injured were rushed to the Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital (ABUTH), Shika, Zaria.

“We learnt that this morning (yesterday) two others have died at the ABUTH bringing the total to seven. The students were coming from Samaru in a commercial bus when they collided with the truck. That portion of the road has a dangerous bend that causes a lot of accidents especially in the night and what made the matter worse was the fact that it was raining at that time,” Mallam Danazumi Chikaji told Daily Trust.

Checks at the ABUTH revealed that four victims of the accident were still receiving treatment. A doctor who doesn’t want his name in print confirmed this to Daily Trust.

The Protocol and Information Officer of the ABU, Mr Bitrus Galmaka said the University’s Chief Security Officer had gotten information about the accident from the police.

“Initially, we were not aware of the accident but when our CSO called the police they have confirmed to him that five people have lost their lives. We are going to ascertain whether all of them are our students or not,” Galmaka said.

Among the deceased is Idris Umar Idris, a graduate of Computer Science from the ABU. Idris is one of the sons of Umar Idris, a Deputy Commissioner of Police, Force Headquarters, Abuja. According to Idris’ family members, their son was due for his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in August this year. The wreckage of both the bus and the truck are presently at the MTD police outpost along the Samaru-Chikaji road in Sabon Gari, Zaria.

Bad government, bad roads, bad drivers and bad police / FRSC depriving Nigerians of ripe old age. Shame!
