THE Bauchi State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has shut down five pharmaceutical shops and a medicine store in Bauchi, the state capital, for selling cough syrup with codeine without prescription.

The NDLEA commander in the state, Mr Sule Momodu, revealed this to newsmen in his office, on Monday, while briefing them on the activities of the agency, insisting that the directive to shut down erring pharmacists’ shops which sell unprescribed drugs to the people, thereby putting their lives in danger, was handed down to the agency by the state government.

Momodu , who said the operation in which the affected outlets were shut down was carried out in collaboration with the state Ministry of Health, warning that more pharmacies and medicine stores would yet be shut down if they were found wanting as far as selling unprescribed drugs to the people was concerned.
