He insisted that come 2015, he would give way to other political actors to slug it out on the nation’s political environment.
In his weekly media interaction with State House correspondents at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, Ruben Abati, special adviser to the president on media and publicity, said Jonathan would present the proposed bill to the national assembly before the end of August, 2011.
"I believe what it means in very clear terms is that the president will not be a beneficiary. In order words, the president will not come in 2015 to benefit if the amendment says so because, if he tries to do that, those saying it is an attempt at tenure elongation will have been vindicated. And he is fully aware of the concern of Nigerians and resolute in upholding that statement that he will not be a beneficiary,” Abati said.
According to the presidential spokesman, "We have to wait until that proposal become a Bill and the National Assembly debate it and we all know the details. If Nigerians do not want such an amendment, it will be the decision of the Nigerian people.”
