Two students of the Polytechnic of Sokoto alleged to be leaders of a notorious gang that specializes in dismantling security gadgets installed by car owners, were recently arrested by the Police at Marina Divisional Headquarters in the state.
Anas Aminu, 25, and Bilyaminu Tafida, 24, were arrested at Birnin Kebbi in Kebbi state for stealing a Honda Civic car with registration number ABUJA ABJ 696 BWR belonging to one Gazali Aliyu Bashar of Danhili area of Sokoto metropolis on October 22 2011, while Ibrahim Sarki is still at large.
Parading the car thieves before Journalists, the Police Public Relations Officer of Sokoto Command, ASP Al-Mustapha Sani, said the gang specialized in stealing cars in the area.
“They specialize in car theft and have been stealing cars no matter how car owners secured their vehicles. After Bashar’s car was stolen, we got intelligence report that the car was seen in Birnin-Kebbi and we sent our men who caught them. Bashar had removed his car battery as a means of security but they came with their own battery and stole the car.”
He assured that the police would son round up other members of the gang. “We are planning to break into the gang to know their network and how they operate.”
Speaking with Crime Alert, the suspects, Aminu and Tafida said they are not car thieves but students with the Polytechnic of Sokoto State.
“We have never stolen any car. We are year-one students at Sokoto state Polytechnic.
The car belongs to our relative, Bashar and we got a battery, fixed it on the car and took it for a ceremony at Kebbi,” Aminu said.
Tafida on his part said: “We have never stolen any car. Our friend invited us to a wedding ceremony in Kebbi and so we got a friend who brought his car key, which we used to start the car.”
Saying that the suspects would be charged to court after investigation, the PPRO advised car owners to be more vigilant and secure their vehicles properly.
