From PAUL ORUDE, Bauchi Friday November 11, 2011
No fewer than 17 people lost their lives on Wednesday in a ghastly motor accident along Azare/Potiskum Road while several others were hospitalised as a result of injuries sustained in the incident.
The Bauchi State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Mr. Zakaria Mamman confirmed the incident to newsmen in Bauchi. Mamman said out of the 32 persons involved in the accident, 21 were males, eight were females, while three children.
The FRSC boss explained that the accident occurred around 12.35pm and involved an 18- seater Toyota commercial bus with registration number XC 195 KPG and a Peugeot Station Wagon 505 with registration number AE466KM.
“The 15 persons that were injured during the accident include seven females, six males and two children, while the 17 persons that lost their lives include 15 males, one female and one child,” he said.
Mamman stated that according to investigations from the FRSC office in Azare, the accident was partly caused as a result of dangerous overtaking and overloading by the colliding vehicles. The sector commander who warned members of the public, particularly passengers, against boarding overloaded vehicles, advised drivers plying the highways to obey speed limits when driving. Mammam told journalists that besieged his office that “it is careless overtaking that usually results to the high rate of accidents on our highways.”
He condoled the families of the deceased persons, stressing that it was the responsibility of motorists and passengers to ensure that traffic rules and regulations were obeyed, particularly now that the embers months were around the corner.
Meanwhile, in another development, the Bauchi sector commander of the commission revealed that four persons in the state had sustained injuries in separate accidents.
The first accident, according to him, occurred when two persons on a motorbike collided along the Maiduguri bye-pass in Bauchi metropolis, while the second accident happened when two Vectra vehicles collided along Dass Road in the state. Mamman who appealed to drivers to be more careful, assured that his men would continue to work toward minimising road accidents on the highways.
He said, “we are already in the ‘ember months’ when many people travel and l wish to call on road users to be patient and observe all traffic rules. We will not hesitate to deal with offenders when caught.”
