Woman Pleads Guilty to Having Sex With Father

Singapore--A woman who had sex with her father pleaded guilty to incest on Wednesday, nine months after he was sentenced to jail.

She is the first woman in Singapore to have been charged with incest, in what is believed to be the first consensual case prosecuted in Singapore.

Neither father nor daughter can be named because of a gag order granted to the defense.

The 24-year-old woman was first charged early last year with permitting her 46-year-old father to have sex with her in the master bedroom of their flat in Serangoon in April 2008.

She was granted a discharge not amounting to an acquittal last September because her father, who was supposed to have been charged with her, failed to turn up in court. A warrant was then issued for his arrest, and he was caught seven months later. The self-employed plumber was sentenced to three years' jail in February this year.

Then, Deputy Public Prosecutor Leong Wing Tuck said investigations had shown that the man had begun including his daughter in the drinking sessions he had with his friends at coffee shops.

The pair grew emotionally close as a result, and would also be physically intimate - hugging, kissing and fondling - when at home alone.

One night in April 2008, the pair had an argument while lying in bed after drinking beer. She apologized to him and he asked for a hug. One thing led to another and they had sex. She regretted what she did afterwards and feared getting pregnant, the court heard. Her father apologized to her, but a week later they had another argument, which became heated. She then sent a text message to her friend, asking her to call the police.

The woman has since moved out of the family flat. Her mother, who was out at the time of the offense, has filed for divorce from her father. He could have been jailed for up to five years.

Noting that no violence or coercion was involved, judge Hamidah Ibrahim had said in February that the offense was serious nonetheless, and the sentence had to reflect society's abhorrence for such offenses.

After the man's conviction, the prosecution decided to revive the charge against his daughter.

There will be another hearing in a month's time, when a judge will decide if the woman should be given probation or a jail term.
