In a national broadcast last night, President Jonathan, who probably said he would have reacted the same way had he been in the shoes of Nigerians, pleaded that he was not out to inflict pains on Nigerians but as President he needed to make tough choices to safeguard the economy and our collective survival as a nation.
He assured that his administration was prepared to make sacrifices, announcing measures to cut the size and cost of governance, including the continuous effort to reduce size of current expenditure and increase capital spending.
He directed that overseas travels by all political office holders including the president be reduced to the barest minimum. The size of delegations on foreign trips is also to be drastically reduced, stressing that only trips that are absolutely necessary will be approved.
He has also directed that for the year 2012, the basic salaries of all political office holders in the executive arm be reduced by 25%.
