Nigeria’s Honourable Minister of Power, Professor Bart Nnaji today announced in a tweet-meet on Monday that the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) will cease to exist on December 31, 2011.

The Minister said that the corporate Headquaters of PHCN will be shut down, while maintaining that “no PHCN staff will be sacked.”

Responding to the question on which companies will distribute power after PHCN no longer exists, Professor Nnaji disclosed that successor companies on distribution, generation and transmission will function.

“The existing successor companies till they are handed over to prospective investors…the PHCN employees will be absorbed by successor companies,” he added.

The Minister further said that his Ministry has also empowered the Nigerian Electricity Management Liability Company to manage the assets and liabilities of PHCN.

The Ministry of Power has also re-established the Nigerian Electric Regulatory Commission (NERC), as a strong regulator to regulate the power industry.

According to the Minister, “we hope that within the next 1-3 years we can efficiently predict power availability across the nation”.

“I want to assure Nigerians that we are doing everything necessary to boost power generation nationwide,” he said in his final tweet to close the tweet-meet on Monday.

Nigeria’s power generation was pegged at 2800MW as at 2010, but has improved to over 4000MW as at November 2011.

Seriously...I dont understand this plan.
