The police superintendent was arraigned by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) before the High Court in Benin City for demanding the sum of N1million and consequently accepting N500,000 from a suspect whose case he was handling.
He promised to manipulate the case in favour of the suspect, who had earlier pleaded in vain with the superintendent to accept the sum of N300,000.
When the suspect reported the matter to the ICPC, a sting operation was set in motion, which eventually led to the arrest of the suspect, after he had received the sum of N500,000 in marked notes in the presence of ICPC operatives. The accused was subsequently arraigned on a four-count charge for demanding and receiving gratification and for failure to report the offer of bribe.
At the conclusion of the trial, the accused was discharged on counts two and four, but he was convicted on count one for demanding gratification and he was sentenced to four years imprisonment. He was also sentenced to three years in jail on count three for failure to report the offer of gratification. Both sentences are to run concurrently.
