A commercial driver in Ilorin has been nabbed for allegedly kidnapped a 20-year old passenger and molesting her repeatedly during her 3-day captivity. The accused, Toyin Imam, who also allegedly stole money and handset of his victim was said to be of no fixed address. Toyin has been dragged before an Ilorin magistrate court and appeared in court on a three-count charge of rape, kidnapping and theft. He has been remanded. Trouble stated when he was arrested following a complaint last Friday at the ‘A’ Division Police Station, Ilorin, by the victim (name withheld) of Karuma Area, Ilorin.

According to the 20-year old victim, she boarded a Toyota Previa with registration number XC115FUF on March 18, 2012 in Ondo, Ondo State for a trip to Ilorin, for which she paid the sum of N2,200 as fare. She said that, on getting to Ilorin, she was advised by another man to hand over her GSM handset to the driver, who was persuaded to take her to Karuma Area, Ilorin, because she was not familiar with the area. After the accused was said to have agreed to take her to her destination, he allegedly took advantage of her, seized her handset, stole her N3,000 and took her to a bush and raped her.

“The man had segxwal intercourse with me inside the bush after threatening to kill me if I refused to comply”, the victim recalled. The accused was also said to have later taken the victim to Maraba Park, Ilorin, where he had another round of sex with her. “He also took me to another location where he kept me for three days after which I shouted for help at Odota Area, Ilorin. It was there that some policemen from Adewole Division, Ilorin, came to my rescue”, she added. The accused was thereby arrested and brought to ‘A’ Division, Ilorin, for detailed investigation. Police First Information Report (FIR) on the matter stated that during investigation, the accused confessed to the crime.

The prosecutor, Corporal Sanni Abdullahi, who had informed the court that investigation into the case was still in progress, objected to bail for the accused and urged the court to remand him at the Federal Medium Security Prison, Mandala, Ilorin, pending the outcome of the investigation. Magistrate Mercy Abikoye, who did not listen to the plea of the accused for lack of jurisdiction to entertain the matter, refused the bail of the accused and ordered that he should be remanded at the said prison, pending the determination of the case against him. The matter was adjourned till April 16, 2012 for further mention.
