A Calabar Magistrate Court presided over by Magistrate Bessey Ebit has ordered that 13 kingmakers in Calabar South Local Government Area of Cross River State should be remanded at the Afokang prison for allegedly breaking into the palace of the paramount ruler of Calabar South, Muri Munene Efiong Mbukpa, and also attempting to murder the monarch.

In the suit No. MC/368C/2012 between the State Commissioner of Police and 13 others which include five kingmakers known as Muris, five village heads and three others in the magistrate court three, the royal fathers and others said to be at large were accused of committing felony by allegedly breaking into the palace of the Muri Munene on April 25, 2012, stealing and attempting to murder the paramount ruler, thereby committing an offence punishable under Section 516 of Criminal Code Cap C16 Vol.111 Laws of Cross River State of Nigeria 2004.

Besides, they were accused to have on the same date and place in the Calabar Magisterial District did steal N150.000.000 comprising a royal hat valued N100,000.00 and two nokia handsets valued N50.000.00, items said to belong to the monarch and that the suspects allegedly attempted to kill the paramount ruler by beating him with sticks and machetes and holding him strongly on the neck in an attempt to kill him.

The Magistrate however did not take the plead of the suspects as she said that the matter was not within her jurisdiction and would seek the advice of the Department of Public prosecution, DPP, for advice whether the case should be transferred to the High Court and adjourned it to April 30, for the DPP advice.

In an interview, counsel to the Muri Munene, Mr. Fidelis Onyebueke said the alleged attempted murder was worrisome especially going by the spate of security threats in the country, adding that what the kingmakers did was a threat to the peace which the government of the day had put in place.

He said, “The use of the army instead of the police was an effrontery to the security of the state even the nation for a civilian to hire and use military men to the palace is horrible in a democratic set up, it means nobody is safe. The Police should not take this lightly; it can happen to any other person. Government should find out who sent them for an individual using siren and the military. I think this is a security threat.”
