Nigeria office of the West African Examination Councils (WAEC) has refuted a report in the media over the general performance of students who sat for the May/June 2011 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
In a rebuttal signed by Deputy Director (Public Affairs), Y.D.

Ari, the council said the analysis from which a conclusion was drawn that one million candidates failed the examination was not a true representation of the figures given during the address by Head of National office, Dr. Iyi Uwadiae, while announcing the release of results on Wednesday, August 10.

“In his address, Head of the National Office revealed that out of the total number of candidates that sat for the examination, 587,630 candidates, representing 38.93%, obtained credit and above in Mathematics, while 838,314 candidates, representing 55.34%, obtained credit and above in English Language.

Similarly, 618,924 candidates, representing 40.55%, obtained credit and above in six subjects, while 789,288 candidates, representing 51.71%, obtained five credits and above. About 943,187 candidates representing 61.80% obtained credit and above in four subjects, whereas 1,084,817 candidates, representing 71.08%, obtained credit and above in three subjects. A total of 1,223,359 candidates, representing 80.15%, obtained credit and above in two subjects. The breakdown was correctly reflected,” the statement read in part.

The council observed that based on statistics of the performance, the analysis carried out in the said media report was too hasty and generalized. It explained that it would be misleading to base success rate on candidates passing English Language and Mathematics and any other three subjects in one sitting only, pointing out that “some candidates that sat for the examination may have done so in order to make up for deficiencies in one or two subjects.”
