11824  Forum / Politics / Osun Residents Troop Out To Welcome Ex Gov & Minister, Aregbesola, Preaches Party Restructuring on: 8-06-2023 08:01 AM

There is jubilation in Osun State on Wednesday as residents trooped out in their numbers to welcome immediate past Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, into the state following the completion of his tenure.

Aregbesola who was received by mammoth crowd in Ilesa and Osogbo was elated by the warm reception given to him by thousands of members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and other residents of the state.

The former Governor of the state paid homage to the Owa Obokun of Ijesaland, Oba (Dr) Adekunle Aromolaran and the Ataoja of Osogbo, Oba Jimoh Olanipekun Oyetunji, in appreciation of the traditional rulers’ support for his political career.

Speaking at the Freedom Park, Osogbo, Aregbesola said it was unfortunate that ‘some people’ mismanaged the affairs of the APC and ran it aground.

He said he had in 2019 called for the unity of the party with a warning that failure to unite different interest groups in the party would not produce any good result.

The former governor of the state said:
Quote
“I have come back to thank you, the people of Osun and those who made it possible for me to progress in politics.

“I need to thank Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, it was through him that I became a Commissioner in Lagos state and a two-term governor in Osun.

“I appreciate former President Muhammadu Buhari; after God, it was him that made me the Minister which I just concluded.

“I am here today to seek restructuring of the party. I didn’t offend anybody, but whoever feels that we offend him or her should forgive us.

“We seek forgiveness from those who thought we offended and those who sought our downfall.

“We were here in 2019 after the Supreme Court affirmed the mandate of the former governor. I called for unity in the party. I warned that disunity will not produce any good result. But devil didn’t allow them (those who handled the party affairs) to listen.

“We seek forgiveness from those who are smearing our image, though we never offended them.

“We supported them with all I have to see to their success. I didn’t ask for anything from them. I need to emphasise that I didn’t ask for anything from them. But they chose to repay evil for good.

“However, we are here for the restructuring of the party. That is why we are begging anybody that feels that we offended him or her to forgive us.”

11829  Forum / Politics / BREAKING: Presidential Election Court Admits 13 States’ Final Result Documents From Peter Obi on: 7-06-2023 09:39 PM

The Presidential Election Petition Court in Abuja, on Wednesday, admitted the final presidential election results as exhibits in Peter Obi’s suit seeking to overturn President Bola Tinubu’s victory.

Mr Obi, who was the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, is praying to the court to nullify the victory of Mr Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as Nigeria’s president.

Mr Tinubu won the 25 February presidential poll after defeating his closest challenger, Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party, and Mr Obi, who came third in the keenly contested election.

The chairman of the electoral commission, Mahmood Yakubu, a professor, on 1 March declared Mr Tinubu, the winner of the election.

Mr Tinubu’s declaration as president-elect would set the stage for a legal battle to void or affirm the president’s victory.

Mr Obi alleges electoral fraud and breach of the constitution and electoral laws against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and Mr Tinubu during the polls.

At the resumed hearing of Mr Obi’s petition on Wednesday, the five-member panel of the court led by Haruna Tsammani, the Labour Party candidate, tendered the collated final presidential election results relied upon by INEC in declaring Mr Tinubu, winner of the polls.

Mr Obi’s lawyer, Paul Ananaba, a professor and SAN, tendered the documents before the court on Wednesday.

The court admitted the results without opposition from the respondents, who have consistently objected to the admissibility of election results and other electoral documents used in the conduct of the election from the states of Nigeria.

The respondents – Mr Tinubu, Kashim Shettima (the vice president), APC and INEC – consented to the admissibility of the final results.

Results from states tendered

Also, at the session on Wednesday, the collated results in the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) were tendered and admitted as exhibits.

Mr Obi, his vice presidential pick, Datti Baba-Ahmed, and other party stalwarts have been attending the court’s proceedings since the hearing of the substantive suit began on 30 May.

The court admitted as exhibits ward collated results from 13 States comprising: Bayelsa, Benue, Cross River, Ebonyi, Edo, Lagos, Niger and Ondo states.

Other states are Oyo, Rivers, Sokoto, Ekiti and Delta.

The Labour Party flagbearer presented collated results in eight local government areas of Bayelsa, 23 in Benue, 18 in Cross River,10 in Ebonyi, 18 in Edo, 20 in Lagos and 25 in Niger States.

Other states include 18 in Ondo, 33 in Oyo, 23 in Rivers, 23 in Sokoto, 16 in Ekiti and 25 in Delta.

Expectedly, Mr Tinubu, INEC, Mr Tinubu, Mr Shetima and the APC objected to the admissibility of this set of electoral documents.

However, the court admitted them as exhibits and would entertain hearing on written objection by lawyers to the respondents at the close of arguments in the case.

Subsequently, the court adjourned the suit until Thursday for further hearing.

With Mr Obi drawing the curtains on tendering of documentary evidence in the petition, the stage is now set for him to call witnesses in full swing to prove his case.

He has only called one witness since the commencement of the hearing in the substantive suit, though he had indicated his intention to call 50 witnesses to substantiate his claims.

Mr Obi’s lawyer, Mr Ananaba, while speaking to journalists shortly after Wednesday’s proceedings, said his client would now begin to call the rest of his witnesses before the court.

The lawyer explained that witnesses would speak through the admitted documents to establish places where electoral fraud was allegedly perpetrated during the February election.
11830  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / UPDATE: Fuel Marketers Declare Support For Subsidy Removal on: 7-06-2023 09:33 PM

The Depots and Petroleum Products Marketers Association of Nigeria (DAPPMAN) on Wednesday in Abuja pledged its support for the federal government’s removal of fuel subsidies.
The association’s chairperson, Winifred Akpani, made the disclosure at the end of a meeting with President Bola Tinubu.

She said the association would also support the government’s palliative measures by providing between 50 and 100 mass transit buses.

Ms Akpani said the buses would be locally manufactured and would use Compressed Natural Gas as fuel.

“We pledge our support for President Tinubu in the bold decision of removing petrol subsidy. It is an idea that was long overdue.

“Removal of subsidy is not about making fuel costly and taking it out of the reach of Nigerians. It is about getting it right on the real issue of petroleum product subsidy.

“Who are those enjoying the subsidy? The subsidy ends up being enjoyed by those it was not meant for.

“We also spoke to the president about substitutes to petrol as well as creating an environment conducive for investments to thrive in the oil sector,”
she said.

Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State, who led the DAPPMAN delegation, described the subsidy removal as a bold step that portended positive growth for the economy

He said fuel subsidy withdrawal was a clear indication of Mr Tinubu’s readiness to address the challenges of the oil and gas sector.

“Subsidy has become a N4 trillion per annum issue and its removal will release more funds for economic development.

“Subsidy removal will unleash the potential of Nigeria because it will open up a lot of resources for the development of other sectors of the economy.

“The National Economic Council will soon begin sitting to propose interventions on the subsidy removal.

“The interventions will definitely be a long-lasting solution to the effect of fuel subsidy removal on Nigerians,’’
Mr Abiodun said.

11837  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Ondo Farmers Raise Alarm Over Destruction Of Farmlands Worth N500m on: 7-06-2023 09:01 AM

Cocoa farmers in Oluwa Forest Reserve, in Odigbo Council area of Ondo State, have raised the alarm over the destruction of their N500 million worth of cocoa plantations by thugs hired by a private firm, despite court injunction halting such action.

They alleged that the firm, SAO Agro-Allied Services Limited, has also engaged soldiers and men of Amotekun Corps, to attack them on the farms.

The over 10,000 farmers, who had spent over 25 years farming the forest, have cried to the Ooni of lfe, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, to intervene in their plight.

Addressing newsmen in Akure, their chairman and Secretary, Abayomi lsinleye and Odugbemi Omolewa, said that some farmers’ had died as a result of destruction of the cocoa plantations.

Recall that the state government, through the Senior Special Assistant (Agric & Agribusiness) to the governor, Akin Olotu, has said that the Oluwa Forest had been handed over to SAO Agro-Allied Services Limited to grade and plant oil palm in line with CBN project.

But, counsel to the farmers,  Tope Temokun, dragged the state government, Attorney General of the state, Ministry of Agric and SAO Agro-Allied Services Limited to court when the firm began to clear the cocoa plantations with earth moving equipment.

The court, thereafter granted an order of interim injunction restraining the respondents, including SAO Agro-Allied Services Limited, their privies, servants, agents or anyone acting through them or for them from further grading of the applicants’ cocoa plantations.

But in flagrant disobedience to the court order, the company had allegedly continued grading the cocoa plantations using soldiers, officials of Amotekun Corps and miscreants to intimidate and attack the farmers.

Speaking with newsmen, the chairman of the farmers, lsinleye, said that “Surprisingly, after the giving of this order, with the backing of the Ondo State government and in flagrant disobedience to the said order of the court, workmen of SAO Agro-Allied Services Limited, under heavy armament of combined team of over hundred of Amotekun officers, soldiers and local vigilante and gunmen were mobilised to the farms.

The claimed they have the directive of the governor’s son, who’s the behind-the-scene veiled chief promoter of these private companies buying up the Ondo State forest reserve lands, to shoot and kill anyone who dared to protest around the farms or dares to stop their work and they have continued on daily basis to grade our cocoa farmlands in the Oluwa Forest reserve.”

” We have approached some notable personalities in the South-West, including the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi to intervene in the mater to stop the firm from further destroying the Cocoa plantations and respect the court order.

“Oba Ogunwusi, has sent delegations to the governor of Ondo State to intervene in this matter to see that due process ess is followed.

“But the destruction of our farmlands have continued by SAO Agro-Allied Services Limited with the backing of government force and state apparatus in disobedience of an order of court.”

“We have been paying our dues on the land to the state government as it charges N10,000 per hectare.

” We have paid N3.5 million this year, leaving N1.5million outstanding to be paid later in the year. This we’ve been doing for the past 25 years that we’ve been cultivating farms in the forest.

But reacting to the farmers allegations, the Senior Special Assistant on Agric and Agribusiness to the governor, Akin Olotu, said that “They have done incalculable damage to the cocoa business in Ondo state.

“In the global market, it has been observed that cocoa in Ondo state is planted in the forest reserve and EU is of the opinion that they don’t want any chocolate product that is coming from forest reserves.

“Those that will bear that brunt are the real cocoa farmers that are farming on community land.

“Apart from that, it was as a result of security threat. When there was insecurity all over, it was part of South West decision to evict illegal farmers on government reserves.

“Who gave them the place in the first place? We need to recover our forest. We have photographs of the farmers setting big trees on fire, cultivating Indian Hemp. So, it is serious matter.“
