Igbo In Lagos Warned Against Illegal Igwes

Orazuluike, has asked Igbo resident in the state to be weary of a group of persons masquerading as titled chiefs, stating that they are out to defraud members of the public.

Orazuluike, who made this disclosure in his palace yesterday, said he was helping security agents in the state to track down their kingpin whom he said was declared wanted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

He added that the kingpin had extended his criminal activities to neighboring countries from where he illegally crowns unsuspecting Igbo chiefs after extorting huge sums of money from them.

“The greatest problem I am having now is that dubious men have joined our traditional institution. I am talking about 419 people. There is this man I crowned in Ikeja, he joined the institution and cracked our original plans of fighting the Igbo course.

"Whenever he gambles and makes quick money, he will use it to disorganize the red cap chiefs”.

Afrobeat Legend Femi Kuti Joins Nigerian Idol As A Judge

After an amazing second season that saw the crowning of Mercy Chinwo as the current Nigerian Idol, the global music phenomenon returns for a third season and steps it up with Afrobeat Legend Femi Kuti as judge.

“It’s a whole new package and cycle this season,” said Tiwa Medubi, the Project Manager. “We keep bringing in new twists and turns to make the show more interesting, two brand new cities made the audition train and most exciting is our own living legend, three-time Grammy nominee and Afrobeat king; Femi Kuti as one of our  judges.” Click to continue.

Femi Kuti who is known to be very conservative, TV shy and rarely leaves the Shrine save for few select performances in Nigeria and world tours, it’s a remarkable testament to the power of the Nigerian Idol brand for him to join the panel of judges.

One of Africa’s biggest recording artistes, Femi Kuti brings to the show wealth of experience that spans well over three decades of performing across the world, plays 6 musical instruments, and has received several international awards. He has collaborated with musicians, including Common, Mos Def, Jaguar Wright, D'Angelo, Macy Gray, The Soultronics, Nile Rodgers, amongst others.  Femi Kuti's voice is featured in the videogame Grand Theft Auto IV, where he is the host of radio station IF 99.

“I am honoured to be part of Nigerian Idol, a show that discovers talents across the country in music. Saying I love music is like saying snow is white. I am beyond passionate about music which is why I single handedly thought myself to play four instruments. I play the Sax twelve hours in a day training myself to get better. So an opportunity to be able to impart on the lives of the future of Nigerian music is one I will never say no to,” says Femi Kuti. "I was very proud when I watched Mercy Chinwo the last winner give a remarkable performance of Felas Zombie when I was a guest judge on the show last season. Many times you see people murder the songs or over act with the moves and make the man look like a caricature but she got it just right with guidance from the coach and judges. I'd like to be part of moulding many more talents with Nigerian Idol, this year.”

Three-time Grammy Award nominee, Femi Kuti, is truly a big step upwards for the Idol franchise in Nigeria.
“Femi’s input in this season hopefully will definitely take the show to new frontiers, we are excited!” said Medubi.

Auditions for Nigerian Idol continues from the 20th of October. If you live in Aba, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, join us in Port Harcourt on the 20th of October. If you are in Anambra, Enugu, Abia and other neighboring states, would meet the audition train in Owerri on the 27th of October. 147  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Fears grow over Enugu gov’s health on: 14-10-2012 01:00 AM
Feelers from the Enugu State Government House on Friday indicated that all might not be well with Governor Sullivan Chime’s health.

Chime’s last public appearance was at the meeting of South-East Governors Forum on September 9, 2012 in Enugu and since then, he was yet to be seen by journalists in the Government House  and public functions.

The Deputy Governor, Mr. Sunday Onyebuchi, has been acting in the governor’s capacity, but his aides are reportedly not pleased with Chime’s directives, that Onyebuchi should not approve more than N500,000 for any project, no matter the circumstance.

Our correspondent exclusively gathered from insiders within government circles that the governor left the country about two weeks before the October 1 Independence anniversary.

“He was not in a very good condition before he left the country for London. We noticed it. Although they didn’t want to make it open, maybe because of journalists,” an insider at the Enugu State Government House, who pleaded not to be mentioned, reliably told SUNDAY PUNCH.

The protocol staff said, “For some time now, we noticed that the governor has not been his usual bubbling self. You may not easily know this because he carries himself well and hardly talks, but some of us knew that the man was down.

“From what we heard, he is no longer in London; he was flown to India last week because his health condition wasn’t getting better. As I speak to you right now, he is in a hospital in India.”

To heighten the suspicion over the governor’s health, flood victims at Udi Local Government Area where Chime hails from said they did all they could to make the governor visit Udi communities that were ravaged by flood in early September, but to no avail, as they were told that he wasn’t too strong to do so.

One of the Udi indigenes, Mr. Victor Ike, said Chime could not detail any of his aides to come on his behalf because he was from Udi and that if he did, especially for a sensitive matter in his local government, the press would easily have suspected that something was amiss.

“Heavy rains destroyed our houses and livestock worth millions of naira at Umuifi village in Obioma, Udi Local Government Area, yet the governor could not visit us, obviously due to his health,” Ike stated.

“Our people in government told us that on the day he was supposed to make it, he relapsed and the trip was cancelled.”

When our correspondent contacted the Speaker of the Enugu House of Assembly, Mr. Eugene Odo, to find out if the governor transmitted a letter to him before leaving for London, Odo hung up the phone as soon as he heard the question.

He refused to pick subsequent telephone calls and did not respond to a text message sent to his mobile phone.

However, some members of the state House of Assembly who pleaded anonymity to avoid victimisation, said a letter was sent by Chime to the Speaker, but that the latter did not inform all the lawmakers of the letter.

Also, the Public Relations Officer in the Enugu State House of Assembly, Mr. Jonah Ugwuanyi, said, “It is not compulsory that the Speaker must read the letter to the entire House. He could decide to read it out during the plenary or executive session.”

While donating wheel chairs at the FSP Centre on Zik Avenue, Enugu, about two weeks ago, Odo reportedly said the governor informed him of his trip.

“The governor wrote me and said he was going on leave and that the deputy governor would act until he returns,” he said.

Imo robbery scare: CP orders banks to re-open

Posted by: Our ReporterPosted date: October 13, 2012In: News| comment : 0

The Imo State Commissioner of Police, Baba Adisa Bolanta, has directed banks in the state which have remained closed after last week’s robbery scare to re-open with immediate effect.

The CP assured the banks that the state command had strengthened security arrangements around financial institutions and other public and private places in the state, noting that enough manpower had been deployed to patrol all strategic places in the state.

It was reported that some banks in Orlu, Orlu Council Area of the state have remained under lock and key after last week’s attempted robbery which was successfully foiled by the police.

Briefing journalists in his office, Bolanta, disclosed that the command has intensified police patrol around banks in the state, to ensure adequate security around the financial institution: “I held a meeting with the regional managers of the banks and assured them of our commitment and efforts to safeguard the banks and they all agreed to reopen, but in Orlu, some of the banks are yet to re-open and it is an act of sabotage to remain shut despite everything the command has done to provide security at the banks.”

Lock the school gates and get me my school keys” – Gov. Orji shuts down ABSU over protests

by Stanley Azuakola

Abia State University experienced a serious crisis situation this week. And perhaps fittingly, the situation which erupted as a result of a proclamation by the state governor, Theodore Orji, has been stayed for now, due to another proclamation of his.

The genesis of the matter was an order by Gov. Orji that students who had not paid their school fees should not be permitted to sit for the semester exams.

His “no fees, no exams” declaration did not go down well with the students, especially those in their final year, who would automatically have an extension of their degree program, if they do not write the exams.

According to a YNaija correspondent, the governor carried out his threat and students who had not paid were prevented from writing the exam. That first day of the exams, the excluded students staged a protest.

The desperation got to them by the second day however, and the protest turned markedly violent. The students went on a rampage, damaging and vandalizing school property. They set up a bonfire and burnt the picture of the governor which was placed at the school’s main gate.

Lecturers unsure and afraid that the student rage might get more violent escaped, including the vice-chancellor who allegedly fled via an untarred road leading to the Expressway.

That was the final straw for the governor, who ordered military men into the school. The soldiers chased students away from the university’s hostels.

According to a YNaija correspondent at ABSU, a bus conveying some of the chased students was involved in a car crash. No death was recorded as the students were taken to the hospital.

Some of the students who were chased also spent that night at the school’s car park. One of the soldiers who spoke with our correspondent, said that the governor gave orders for the soldiers to “lock the school gate and get him his school keys.”

Delta Flood: ‘11 women had babies, 700,000 displaced’

The National Emergency Management Authority (NEMA) has disclosed that 11 pregnant women were delivered of their babies in camps provided for the 700,000 flood displaced people in Delta State.

A statement issued by NEMA's spokesman, Yushau Shuaibu, on Friday, said that “as President Jonathan visited Delta State, NEMA has confirmed that while more than 700,000 have been displaced, the agency has registered 28,764 IDPs in 11 camps in 14 Local Government Areas in Delta State. At least 11 pregnant women were delivered of their babies in the camps as at today (Friday).”

Having seen the plight of flood victims across the country, President Goodluck Jonathan took hope to various refugee camps with the assurance that government at all levels and spirited organisations were behind them.

“We, at the federal, state and local governments as well as your elected representatives are touched by your plight,” Dr. Jonathan told Delta State victims at the I.C.E camp in Asaba after inspecting devastated areas by helicopter.

The president said the federal government, working in collaboration with the states, would come up with improved seedlings, which will be made available to the farmers as the flood would hopefully recede before mid-November as a way of reviving agricultural input.

Apart from the committee put in place, Dr. Jonathan expressed confidence that international donor agencies would compliment efforts of those in the country to assuage the pains being experienced by the affected persons.

He expressed appreciation with the level of mobilisation and assistance by the Delta State government in bringing succor to victims.

Earlier, Govenor Uduaghan briefed the President that four out of the 12 Local Government Areas affected by the flood were completely submerged, adding that the level of water has continued to rise beyond expectation instead of receding.

Truck pusher stabs prostitute to death

A 22-year-old truck pusher, identified as Samuel Akuro, is now in the hospital under the watchful eyes of the police for allegedly stabbing a female prostitute to death in the oil-rich city of Warri, Delta State.

The suspect, it was gathered, also stabbed himself out of fear of the mob, when it dawned on him that his victim had died.

Saturday Tribune gathered that the incident started when the truck pusher visited a brothel along Okere road and approached two ladies, who separately turned him down.

Sources disclosed that the prostitutes refused Samuel because he did not have money, though he was well known as a regular customer.

Unperturbed, Samuel, it was learnt, relocated to another brothel at No 26, two buildings away from the first one where his advances were again rejected until he saw the deceased, who had been his regular customer and had also rejected his move.

“It was at this stage that Samuel became angry and drew a bottle, broke it and stabbed the girl (whose identity was yet to be ascertained at the time of filing this report). When he realized that the girl was dying and there was a surging crowd advancing towards the hotel, Samuel, afraid of being mobbed, stabbed himself with the aim of committing suicide,” a security source disclosed.

Saturday Tribune learnt that the stabbed prostitute was later rushed to the Warri Central Hospital where she gave up the ghost while doctors and nurses were battling to save her.

The suspect was apprehended by security men from “A” Division Police, Warri, and was taken to the Warri Central Hospital for treatment.

Saturday Tribune observed, during a visit to the Hospital on Friday, that the suspect was hand-cuffed to a stretcher as a result of his ‘violent nature’.

It was gathered that Samuel Akuro, the truck pusher, who lives alone in Warri after the relocation of his parents to the village, had attempted killing himself in the past, but was rescued from the river he jumped into.

Looking restless, Samuel Akuro, who hails from Ewu in Ughelli South Local Government Area, said he did not know what came over him on the day he stabbed the prostitute to death.

“I wanted to kill myself that day, but at the river, I was rescued. I later went to the hotel at Okere road because the girls have been ‘eating’ my money. I found myself in this hospital where I was told that I stabbed a girl to death at the hotel.

“I don’t know how it happened and if a man of God should come here now, he will know that something is wrong with me,” he said at the Warri Central hospital before he was transferred to the Delta State Teaching Hospital, Oghara.

Pastor divorces wife after 26 years

Published on October 12, 2012 by pmnews   ·   4 Comments
A Nigerian pastor has got his prayer fulfilled by a Customary Court in Lagos.

After accusing his wife of 26 years and mother of his seven children of disrespect and lack of support, he wanted the marriage annulled.

An Igando Customary Court granted his prayers Friday.

The Court President, Mr Adewale Eko, held that Pastor Goodness Enemechukwu and Augustina were no longer husband and wife, as efforts of the court to save the union failed.

“This court has no choice than to dissolve the union, in spite of the fact that the wife still claims she loves her husband. The parties are free to go their separate ways,’’ he ruled.

He said that the first three children of the marriage, aged 25, 23, 21 were old enough to decide where to live.

” The custody of the remaining four children, who are under age, is hereby referred to the Family Court,” he said.

The court ordered Goodness to allow Augustina to enter his house and pack her belongings in the presence of some court officials and policemen.

Eko also ordered the cleric to pay N100,000 as rehabilitation cost to Augustina, and N10,000 monthly for the upkeep of the children.

Goodness, a pastor of the Jesus World Church, filed for divorce on 4 September.

“My wife is giving me a tough time; she does not respect me, she fights me and rains curses on me,’’ Goodness told the court.

He claimed that Augustina refused to support his ministry, and that she discouraged worshippers from coming to the church.

“Because of her troubles, I had to leave the house for her and move to the camp,” the pastor, who resides at Okerube, a Lagos suburb, said.

He prayed the court to dissolve the union to enable him to forge ahead in his pastoral work.

Augustina denied the allegations, saying that she has been a submissive wife.

She accused Goodness of womanising.

“About six members of the church have called me on phone, telling me to warn my husband. I told him to stop disgracing God and turn a new leaf, but he refused,” she said.

Man Hides Cocaine in Pendants..Says I Did It For My Late Father's Burial !

Oluigboka Chukwuemeka Emmanuel thought he had cleverly concealed about 2.4 kilogrammes of cocaine in pendants and female belts.

But his luck ran out when he was intercepted by Nigeria’s National Drug Law Enforcement officials.

The 33-year old suspect had just disembarked from a flight from Brazil when he was arrested at the Murtala Muhammed international airport in Lagos, southwest Nigeria. Click to read more.

“During search, powdery substances that tested positive for cocaine were found in his bag. It took several hours to extract the cocaine from the pendants because of the complex method of concealment,” said Mitchell Ofoyeju, NDLEA Head of Public Affairs.

Cocaine, cocaine
The agency’s airport commander, Mr. Hamza Umar, disclosed that the drug was factory packed inside assorted pendants. He described the mode of concealment as unusual.

“This mode of concealment is strange and it is the first time of discovering drugs inside jewellery,” he said.

Umar explained that the drugs were industrially packed in ear rings, buttons, necklaces, bangles as well as in female belts.

“We had to forcefully open them to recover the drugs. The entire quantity of cocaine found in the jewellery products weighed 2.472kg. One arrest has been made in connection with the seizure,” Umar said.

NDLEA said preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect, who had lived in Brazil for over five years, is believed to be working for a suspected Brazilian-based drug syndicate.

The suspect was quoted as saying, “I needed money for the burial anniversary of my late father. As the breadwinner, everybody is looking up to me for the sponsorship of the anniversary. I have lived in Brazil for over five years but I have no money to undertake this important family responsibility. My interest was the 2,000 euros they promised to pay me”.

Oluigboka is married and has a child. He hails from Imo State. The arrest took place last week.

Okada Rider Takes Nurse To Slaughter Slab

A commercial motorcycle rider, also known as okada rider in Bekwara, Cross River State, southsouth Nigeria, identified as Ifeanyi alias Koboko, played the devil’s role when he kidnapped a nurs
Published on October e, Mrs Helen Ilonge and she was killed for ritual.

P.M.NEWS investigation revealed that Helen, who headed the Public Health Unit in the Bekwara local government council, was taken to ritualists who beheaded her for rituals after her relatives had paid a ransom.

Ifeanyi, whose father is Igbo and mother from Ogoja, in Cross River, was allegedly paid  N10,000 by the ritualists to bring the victim for them.

Ifeanyi allegedly abducted the 51-year old woman at Okpogrinya Junction along the Ogoja –Calabar highway. He reportedly took the nurse, who was returning from Assemblies of God programme in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital, to Ukpe, a village along the Ogoja–Ikom highway where she was beheaded and later cut into pieces for money making ritual.

The victim’s neighbour, Mrs Theresa Idagwu, told P.M.NEWS yesterday  that “she called her daughter, Victoria Agah, at about 9 p.m. on the fateful day and told her that she was at Okpogrinya junction and that she is taking a commercial motorcycle to Ogoja and  when she gets to Ogoja she would call again so that she can boil water for her because she was catching cold following the rain which was falling all day. That was the last call.”

According to Mrs Idagwu, the deceased neighbour at Abuochiche estate where the nurse had an apartment, the phone remained silent until the next day when a call came through from the kidnappers demanding for a ransom of N50,000 naira which should be sent through MTN and Glo recharge cards.

“And since she could not raise the money for the recharge cards, she rushed to the Bekwara council headquarters where the Head of Administration, Mr Bisong Bogbo and the chairman of council, Mr Linus Edeh, provided the money and sent it to the kidnappers.

“Initially, they said they were at Ishi Eke near Abakaliki. The voice claimed that he needed the recharge so he could sell and run away from his master who is a ritualist whom he has been serving for a long time and was tired. He said once he gets the cards they will release the woman,” she added.

Tears streamed down Mrs Idagwu’s cheeks while narrating the tragic incident.

According to Mr Bogbo, “the cards were sent to the kidnappers by the daughter to the victim online and he said he will confirm and immediately after that the phone went dead. But later we heard that the woman was cut into pieces.

“It was through a tracking device that  the place was located and it was in Abuochiche and some people confirmed that Ifeanyi was selling the MTN and Glo recharge cards there. And when the police swooped on him, they discovered that it was those cards sent to them that he was selling.”

At the council headquarters, the victim’s colleague, Mr Gabriel Emeka Ogar, said she is probably the kindest woman she has worked with.

“I have worked with five coordinators but I know that she is the best so far,” Ogar said.

According to him, the lady had worked to the satisfaction of the governor and now she has been killed, leaving her five children without a helper.

“Her husband died five years ago and since then she has been the one taking care of the children. Only one has graduated. Please let the government do something for those poor children,” he added.

The Cross River State Police Command Public Relations Officer, DSP John Umoh,  said the matter is under investigation and four suspects, including Ifeanyi, are in their custody in Calabar.  He said the Homicide Unit is handling the investigation and when that is completed they shall be taken to court.

“We have taken confessional statements from them. They claim the dismembered body was buried in a swamp. We shall exhume the body for autopsy,” Umoh said.

Meanwhile, trouble is brewing in Obanlikwu, her local government of origin as youths have for three days running been blocking the road leading to the Obudu Ranch Resort asking that justice must be done.

1,000 Divorcees Set For Mass Wedding

The Kano State Hisba Board has concluded arrangements for group marriage for 1,000 widows and divorcees, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

The Commander- General of the board, Sheik Aminu Daurawa, told NAN in Kano on Thursday that the board had constituted a 30-member committee with representatives from women groups to screen prospective couples after the Eid-El Kabir celebrations.

“The board has already commenced preparation for the wedding as it has set up a committee to screen the couples.

“The wedding is expected to take place after the Eid-el-Kabir; that is why the committee is mandated to start the screening immediately.

“The committee is expected to screen and ensure that prospective husbands have a means of livelihood and above all, that they are healthy and fit to marry.”

“After the last wedding we received complaints with regards to the health conditions of some of the couples.

“So, this time around, we have taken measures to ensure that the couples are healthy and match each other.”

According to him, the board has entered into an agreement with the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital with a view to conducting free medical check on prospective couples.

NAN recalls that 250 widows and divorcees were joined under the second phase of the mass wedding last July.

This is not about insulting anybody for making comment, it's about saying what you feel is the truth.....Drugs, kidnapping and the likes are becoming something else in Nigeria and we have to drop sentiments and tribalism and 'call a spade a spade'...... These things do not speak well of Nigerians hence we must learn to condemn evil regardless of who is involved,,,, it's quite  unfortunate that tribalism has so beclouded our sense of judgement that we don't see anything wrong in crime if it's committed by our tribal people instead we insult people who are saying the truth and call them names,,,, Tribalism and sentiment is the major reason why government cannot successfully fight against corruption and crimes in Nigeria.... Each time anyone is involved in crime and is to be dealt with his/her tribal people will start crying foul and bring tribalism into it.....we cannot actually reach any meaningful height with this kind of attitudes.....It's true that we are all Nigerians yet we have our different names and we hail from different families and tribes, if you don't want the name of your family or tribe to be drag to the mud tell your family members and tribal people to stay away of anything that has the capacity of tarnishing your image
