81  Forum / Politics / Peter Obi Rallying Obidients To Shake Up Nigeria's Election - Reuters on: 24-08-2022 07:23 PM

The Presidential Candidate of Labour Party, Peter Obi has been profiled by Reuters as he unifies youths ahead of the 2023 presidential election.

According to the article, Obi has successfully formed a partnership with youths desirous of trying to bring change to the country.

Read the full article below:

Peter Obi is hardly a political outsider, but the bespectacled former governor says he is looking to harness Nigerians' anger with the status quo to power his third-party presidential bid.

Obi, 61, has generated substantial buzz among younger voters in Africa's most populous democracy, where the average age is 18, but the president - and both major-party candidates for the February 2023 election - are septuagenarian political veterans.

His followers, who call themselves "Obi-dients", say he can solve what ails Nigeria, including unprecedented insecurity, industrial-scale oil theft and allegations of widespread corruption eight years after President Muhammadu Buhari ran promising to eradicate it.

Nigerian electoral law forbids candidates from campaigning before Sept. 28. In a recent interview at his Lagos residence, Obi, speaking as a private citizen, said Nigeria's problems could turn voters against the two dominant parties, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and opposition People's Democratic Party (PDP).

"The system they've operated over the years, it has brought us to where we are," Obi told Reuters.

Bola Tinubu, 70, is the APC candidate and Atiku Abubakar, 75, is running for the opposition PDP.

Many of Obi's backers were also prominent in 2020 protests against police brutality that ended with security forces opening fire on unarmed demonstrators, leaving them particularly keen to oust older leaders.

Young people accounted for half of voters in 2019, and 84% of the 10.49 million recently registered voters were aged 34 and below. read more

'WE WILL BREAK ALL OF IT'

Obi was Atiku's running mate in 2019, but said he lost faith in the nomination process. He is now running with the Labour Party, one of 18 registered political parties.

Dressed in a tailored-but-casual blue "senator style" suit and sandals, Obi said that voters in a nation "on the brink" would eschew religious, ethnic and tribal loyalties that typically help the major parties dominate elections.

"What is important is that people trust," he said, adding: "It is simple. You may not like me. But what I'm coming here to do will be different."

Still, as a political veteran himself, Obi has attracted his share of controversy in the past.

Assets he controlled appeared in the Pandora Papers leaks, and during the 2019 campaign he and Atiku were challenged on their track records regarding corruption and investing government funds in private businesses, some of which they owned shares in, while in public office. Both denied any allegations of graft, and Obi said the Pandora Papers accounts were part of legal and legitimate asset management.

Now Obi says he is happy to stand on his record as governor of southeastern Anambra state, which left a rare budget surplus.

His gubernatorial tenure, he added, showed that he was unafraid of angering powerful interests to help the nation, and was more important to voters than his Christian faith or identity as an Igbo - an ethnic group where some members agitate for a breakaway nation.

"We will break all of it to make it work," he said.

Obi said he is finalising specifics of his platform - such as how he would handle the tightly controlled naira currency or deal crippling fuel subsidies.

But he said he would renegotiate debt, extricate the government from the economy and enable the private sector to thrive.

"The young ones want to see a country with a future," he said. "My job is to take the country and give it to them."
82  Forum / Politics / How INEC Officials Collected N50,000 Bribes During Voters’ Registration In Niger State on: 24-08-2022 07:19 PM

Officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission have been accused of extortion in Niger State.

Marred by insecurity and extorted by officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission, communities in Niger State faced double jeopardy: pay ransom to kidnappers and bribe INEC officials to get their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).

WikkiTimes documented the travails of residents of some communities in the insurgents’ ravaged Niger State where some officials of INEC were found to be extorting as high as N50,000 per polling unit to register just 30 voters.

Ahead of the 2023 general elections, Niger State has recorded the largest number of new voter registrations in the North-Central region.

By August 1, 2022, a total of 369,908 registrations have been completed, according to INEC. The state now has 1.7 million registered voters out of an estimated 4 million population.

Despite this achievement, participation in rural and insecure areas is typically low. WikkiTimes found that many potential voters were unable to register in local communities that had been under attack by terrorists.

Due to the insecurity, it was learnt that some INEC registration agents asked potential voters to pay before registering them.

In Gogata village, four different groups had to contribute N10,000 each to get their people registered. The group namely Soko Majin, Ebo Soko, Soko Deke and Bawu Soko collectively raised N40,000 for INEC officials in Kutigi, the headquarters of Lavun Local government Area.

Despite that, only a few people were registered. “They were not up to 50,” said Mohammed Gogata, the spokesman for Bawu Soko group. According to him, many people were not registered as they were told that their details had already been captured in the system.

In Ndaruka village, residents narrated that they contributed N50,000 for the INEC registration agents to carry out the exercise.

A youth leader in Ndaruka, Yakubu Abdullahi said the N50,000 could only register about 30 villagers. “They told many of us that we don’t need a new PVC (permanent voter’s card) since some of us have the ones from 2004, 2007, 2011 and 2015,” he said.

Ndace Abudullahi Ndaruka said he travelled about 30 kilometres to Kutigi after losing his 2015 PVC. “All four times I went there, I would only meet the guard of the facility,” he said. “They are always not around. Luckily, I was captured after we paid for them to come to our village.”

The exercise was similar in other villages, such as Santali, Ebbo, Makolo, Dagbegi, Dagbeko, Ggbacita and Shaku.

Extorting locals has become a norm in Lavun, according to Abdullahi Mohammed Eginda, the Chairman of Lavun Youth Congress (LYC).

Corroborating WikkiTimes’ findings, he said LYC has received reliable reports of bribery and extortion in almost every village in Lavun.

According to him, the problem is not peculiar to Lavun alone, but to the whole of northern Nigeria. “INEC asked their staff to go to ward centres where villages under the ward are expected to come there and register,” he said. “For Instance, Egbako is the only ward centre in Nigeria that is not connected to the national grid and when INEC asks their officials to go there, they won’t provide them with logistics?”

The LYC Chairman further noted, “In places where we have mass voters’ registration, it is through the efforts of the villagers who paid INEC officials to get them down to their communities.”

Just like Lavun, INEC agents deployed to Lapai made bribery a prerequisite to get locals registered.

Kuchi-Kebba and Katakpa villages under Ebbo/Gbanciku ward were asked to raise N50,000 each for the officials, it was reliably gathered.

Amid hunger and poverty ravaging locals in Katakpa village, each villager was asked to contribute N200 towards the N50,000 for the registration agents.

“But we were able to gather N30,000,” said Muhammad Shuaibu, a resident of the village. He disclosed that despite this, the officials did not show up, perhaps because “the money was not complete”.

“They asked each villager to pay N200 before they could come and register us,” said Ahmed Mamman, a resident of Katapka. His claim was corroborated by Rabiu Abubakar, the Chairman, Katakpa Youth Must Grow Association. According to Abubakar, more than half of Katakpa residents do not have PVC.

Residents in Kuchi-Kebba added that a grassroots politician had to pay to bring INEC officials from Minna, the state capital, to carry out the registration in the community.

Fewer than one million voters cast their ballots in the 2019 gubernatorial election in Niger State but as the 2023 election approaches, some youths in Lavun are trying to mobilise more voters.

“Now, we don’t want it to be business as usual,” said Yakubu Abdullahi, a youth leader in Ndaruka. “When you look at our population, we have a lot of unregistered eligible voters who have not been voting simply because they do not have PVC and cannot travel those lengthy kilometres to Kutigi.”

He continued, “In the past, when it is election time, only a few people who had PVC will vote and the rest whose details are on the system but have misplaced their cards will create room for votes not cast. This time around, we want to vote and that is why we are doing all we can to get our people registered.”

Leaders in the villages noted that they believed that paying INEC officials to come to their villages for the registration would result in la arge voter turnout in the general elections.

Isah Yakubu, a resident of Egbako village stated that the digitised form of registration has stripped Egbako of the manual voters’ registration it previously enjoyed. “In 2011 and 2015, they used a manual system of voters’ registration for us,” Yakubu said. “But the machines they are using are not working in Egbako as a result of poor telecommunication network.”

Ibrahim Mohammed, the Youth Leader of Egbako ward decried the “unethical” conduct of the INEC officials, saying, “They are supposed to register our people for free.”

He added that the INEC registration agents from Kutigi were intentionally sidelining communities that did not cooperate with them.

To get registered, residents of Kurebe, a banditry-ridden village in Shiroro local government area of Niger State, travelled about 30 kilometres to Udawa, a Kaduna community bordering Niger.

“INEC officials were deployed to Udawa where most (not all) of our people met them to register,” said Alhaji Haruna Kurebe. He extolled INEC officials who mustered the courage to travel to Udawa because they could not risk their lives coming to Kurebe. “Kurebe is not safe even for the residents, not to talk of strangers.”

Yusuf Saidu, the village head of Kurebe noted that he was not sure elections would be held in the village due to insecurity.

“In the past when there was peace, INEC officials found it easy to get down to our community but not now when the village has been ransacked by criminal elements,” Saidu said, adding, “There are plans to move us to a safer place where we can vote.”

He, however, explained that many of his subjects are not talking about elections again, but security. “Let the government get rid of those terrorists to allow us to have peace in our village.”

This is contrary to a statement by Yakubu Mahmud, the commissioner of INEC who repeatedly said concerted efforts were taken to ensure smooth electioneering procedures in hard-to-reach communities including those troubled by insecurity.

Wasiu Abiodun, the Niger State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) declined to comment on the commissioner’s claim to engage security agencies in ensuring those in vulnerable communities were not neglected.

Sani Yusuf Kokki, the co-convener of Concerned Shiroro Youths, in an interview with WikkiTimes explained that some wards would be moved to safer places to exercise their civil rights.

“There is no way INEC will send its officials to some troubled areas. It is not possible,” Kokki said. “I have not confirmed it officially though, but I learnt that people in some troubled areas would be moved to their local government headquarter in Kuta, and other safer places.”

Nonetheless, there are troubled communities that are relatively peaceful at the moment, according to Kokki.

“For instance, villages under Gurmana ward are safe now because of the ongoing construction of Zungeru dam,” Kokki said. “Due to the construction, water has surrounded the whole place and it makes it difficult for bandits to strike.”

For two consecutive days, our reporter visited the INEC head office in Minna, Niger State. But attempts to meet with the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Professor Samuel Egwu were fruitless.

The following day, the INEC Commissioner representing Niger, Kogi and Kwara States in North Central Nigeria, Prof Mohammed Sani Adam, addressed journalists at the commission’s office in Minna.

Adam, however, dodged salient questions and summarily noted that all the challenges that have to do with local communities have been handled by the commission.

“We have taken care of disjointed and displaced communities,” he said. “That is not a problem as far as INEC is concerned.”

84  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / INEC Lists Benefits Of Proposed National Electoral Offences Commission on: 24-08-2022 07:03 PM

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has listed benefits the country will get with the establishment of a National Electoral Offences Commission.

According to INEC chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, the Commission will help see that highly placed sponsors of thuggery and high-profile figures that seek to benefit from violations of the law are arrested and prosecuted.

Speaking at the public hearing on the Bill for an Act to establish the National Electoral Offences Commission and Related Matters, organised by the House of Representatives Committee on Electoral Matters in Abuja on 23rd August 2022, Prof Yakubu said INEC would also like to see more successful prosecution of offenders, not just ballot box snatchers, falsifiers of election results and vote buyers at polling units. To him, the proposed Commission would facilitate the attainment of such an objective.

REMARKS BY THE CHAIRMAN, INDEPENDENT NATIONAL ELECTORAL COMMISSION (INEC), PROFESSOR MAHMOOD YAKUBU, AT THE PUBLIC HEARING ORGANISED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES COMMITTEE ON ELECTORAL MATTERS, HEARING ROOM 236 (NEW BUILDING, HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES), NATIONAL ASSEMBLY, ABUJA, TUESDAY 23RD AUGUST 2022

1. On behalf of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), I would like to thank the Honourable Chairman and Honourable Member of the House of Representatives Committee on Electoral Matters in particular and the leadership of the National Assembly in general for organizing this public hearing. Coming about four months after a similar public hearing on the same Bill by the Senate Committee on INEC held on 28th April 2022, this is the closest the nation has come to the passage of the long overdue National Electoral Offences Commission Bill into law. I hope in the next few months, the National Assembly will pass the Bill so that it will not suffer the fate of previous efforts which were inchoate at the end of the lifespan of the Assembly.

2. The Bill for an Act to establish the National Electoral Offences Commission is a critical legislation. It has been part of all national conversations on constitutional and electoral reforms for the last 13 years. The Justice Mohammed Uwais Committee on electoral reforms recommended it in 2009, echoed by the Sheikh Ahmed Lemu Committee following the post-election violence of 2011 and, most recently, by the Senator Ken Nnamani Committee on Constitutional and Electoral Reform in 2017. Similar recommendations are contained in reports of police investigations, INEC administrative enquiries, court judgments, reports by the National Human Rights Commissionas well as several accredited election observers.

3. It is clear that the reform of our electoral process cannot be complete without effective sanctions on violators of our laws. At present, INEC is saddled with the responsibility of prosecuting electoral offenders under the Electoral Act. This has been very challenging for the Commission. For instance, since the 2015 General Election, 125 cases of electoral offences were filed in various Courts out of which 60 convictions have been secured so far, including the most recent one in Akwa Ibom State.

4. The Commission would like to see more successful prosecution of offenders, not just ballot box snatchers, falsifiers of election results and vote buyers at polling units but most importantly, their sponsors. We look forward to the day when highly placed sponsors of thuggery, including high-profile figures that seek to benefit from these violations, are arrested and prosecuted. We believe the work of the proposed Commission will help in this regard.

5. However, much as the Commission would like to see more successful prosecution of offenders, our effort is hampered by obvious constraints. INEC is basically an electoral commission with extensive responsibilities which include the registration and regulation of political parties, the monitoring of party and campaign finance, their primaries, congresses, meetings and conventions; nationwide Continuous Voter registration (CVR) and the maintenance of the national register of voters; creation of polling units; delimitation of electoral constituencies; voter education and publicity; management of electoral logistics; recruitment, training and deployment of election duty officials. Other responsibilities include the conduct of numerous off-cycle and bye-elections; new innovations to promote inclusivity and electoral integrity; election security in consultation with the security agencies; strategic engagement with stakeholders; formulation of regulations, guidelines and manuals for the conduct of elections and electoral activities to give clarity to the provisions of the Constitution and Electoral Act; and maintenance of extensive physical assets (offices, residential accommodation and other facilities) nationwide. In many jurisdictions, some of these responsibilities are carried out by distinct and autonomous agencies.

6. In addition to these responsibilities, the Commission is required to prosecute electoral offenders. However, the Commission’s incapacity to arrest offenders or conduct investigation that leads to successful prosecution of especially the high-profile offenders, led to the suggestion to unbundle the Commission and assign some of its extensive responsibilities to other agencies as recommended by the Uwais and Nnamani Committees.

7. For those who argue that the solution does not lie in expanding the federal bureaucracy by creating a new Commission, we believe that the National Electoral Offences Commission should be seen as an exception. While there are other security agencies that deal with economic and financial crimes, I am yet to hear anyone who, in good conscience, thinks that it is unnecessary to have established the anti-corruption agencies.

8. We have studied the 46 Clauses of the Bill under consideration and made 16 comments. I would like to touch on two Clauses and make a general observation while submitting our detailed comments to the Committee. First is Clause 33 (1) of the Bill which confers jurisdiction on Federal, State and FCT High Courts to try offenders under the Bill. However, these Courts are already over-burdened. It is proposed that Electoral Offences Tribunal be established with exclusive jurisdiction to try electoral offenders. The second is Clause 44 which empowers the Attorney-General of the Federation to make rules or regulations for the Commission. Conferring additional power to any other body may cause friction or conflict with the Commission which should be independent in the discharge of its functions even if doing so requires consequential amendment to other laws of the Federation to empower the Commission and guarantee its independence. In any case, Clause 1(2)[c] of the Bill grants the Commission power to make its own rules and regulations. Thirdly, because work on the Bill started before the passage of the current Electoral Act into law, all references to the Electoral Act 2010 (as amended), for example Clause 39(1), should be replaced with relevant provisions of Electoral Act 2022.

9. Once again, the Commission commends the leadership of the National Assembly, as well as the Chairman and Honourable Members of the Committee on Electoral Matters for the invitation to this public hearing.

85  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Drama As Benue Guards Nab Suspects Linked To Boko Haram on: 24-08-2022 06:59 PM

Five suspected foreign fighters known as Amazonian fighters have been arrested by the newly established Community Volunteer Guards in Benue State.

A statement issued by the Special Adviser on Security, Lt. Col. Paul Hemba (retd.), said that the foreign fighters who were linked to Boko Haram were arrested Monday afternoon at Jato Aka roundabout near a drinking joint.

The suspects were identified as; Stanley Vincent 25 years, Ojong David, Njeke Ronado 42 years, Ngum Emmanuel and Obem Samuel 26 years.

The security adviser said one of the suspects, Stanley, when questioned, disguised to be a personnel of the Nigerian Army, serving at Ojo, Lagos State.

“That he was assigned by his boss to come and escort them to Cameroon. However, his identity card was not found on him, a development that triggered suspicion on those suspects.

The statement further read in part, “On August 22, 2022, at 3 pm, at Jato Aka Roundabout, near DZOHO Aondofa Drinking Joint, Kwande Local Government Area, the BSCVG arrested five Ambazonian Fighters suspected to have had linked with not only Boko Haram, but also Ambazonians fighting the Republic of Cameroon for years.

“Further checks revealed that chemical weapons which carries a label ‘DANGER’, Military Uniform, charms, and undisclosable number of ammunitions were found on the Amazonians who further disclosed to have stayed at Agogo Hotel, Jato Aka, for a period of six months uninterruptedly, a hotel owned by one Dooorun AGOGO.

The suspects were said to have been handed over to police in Adikpo, headquarters of Kwande local government.

The security adviser said the criminal activities of the suspects might not be unconnected to armed robbery and kidnapping incidents which had occurred in the council area in the past six months.

87  Forum / Politics / 2023: We’re Not Underrating APC, PDP – Kwankwaso’s NNPP on: 24-08-2022 06:46 PM

The New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP, has disclosed that it would not underrate the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) but is building structures to swing surprises.

The National Chairman of the Party, Prof. Rufai Alkali, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Lagos.

Alkali said the NNPP as an alternative platform will spring surprises nationwide in the 2023 general elections.

According to him, the kind of leadership the NNPP would be bringing into Nigeria would be totally different from what the other political parties had offered and are offering.

“We’re out to reduce the drift and sharp edges of anger and bitterness in the country.

“NNPP is a party that is rooted in a national movement that will usher in a greater Nigeria.

“We have now got our candidates at different levels, and we’re getting ready for the campaigning time soon for the elections.

“Of course, we’re not oblivious of the power of what PDP and APC can do.

Our party is on course. We’re very strong. We are waxing stronger. We are concerned about the future of Nigeria and our democracy.”

Sani in a tweet stated that Yetunde’s gesture is the highest demonstration of love.

Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani has applauded Yetunde, the wife of veteran rapper, Eedris Abdulkareem, for donating her kidney to her husband.

Yetunde got praises after her husband took to social media on Wednesday to thank her for it. Eedris said words could not express his love for her, adding that he would forever cherish her.

The ‘Jagajaga’ singer also described his wife as “adorable, loving, supportive, and compassionate” and one whom God used to make his life complete.

Reacting to this, Sani in a tweet stated that Yetunde’s gesture is the highest demonstration of love, adding that she has raised the bar in matrimony.

“Eedris Abdulkareem wife, Yetunde donated her Kidney to her husband. There can be no better & priceless expression & demonstration of love than this.

89  Forum / Education / ASUU-IMSU Backs Indefinite Strike on: 24-08-2022 06:36 PM

Imo State University ASUU chapter has said it is in support of lecturers going on an indefinite strike.

The National Executive Council of the Academic Staff Union of Universities has been urged not call off the strike until the federal government resolves the outstanding issues with the union.

The call was made by Imo State University, chapter of ASUU on Wednesday.

This was disclosed in a statement made available to DAILY POST in Owerri.

The statement, which was signed by the chairman of the branch, Odinakachukwu Ejiogu reads, “After over six months of strike action, just to get the government to sign an agreement whose renegotiation was also a product of an ASUU strike, there is nothing to show for it.

“It is worthy to note that since 2017 when the struggle for the renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement effectively started as opposed to three years after the commencement of the agreement, the Federal Government has been adopting various disruptive actions and inactions just to destabilize the ASUU instead of addressing the issues that are presented.

“For the avoidance of doubt, following numerous letters written by ASUU, contacts and open engagements in the press, culminating in a strike action demanding the Federal Government to constitute a committee to meet with ASUU to renegotiate the overdue 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement, the Federal Government constituted the Prof. Babalakin Committee in 2017.

“Along the line, the Babalakin Committee gave way to another Federal Government appointed committee on the renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement headed by Prof. Munzali Jubril. In 2021, the Munzali Committee working with ASUU came up with recommendations in a draft agreement. ASUU was given a timeline as to how to get the government to sign the agreement but the timeline was not kept. This compelled ASUU to embark on another strike to get the Federal Government to sign the agreement.

“Instead of signing the renegotiated agreement, the Federal Government in March 2022, set up the Nimi Briggs Committee to renegotiate the renegotiated agreement. ASUU entered into the renegotiation of a renegotiated agreement with the Federal Government constituted Nimi Briggs Committee. On the 16th of June, 2022, the Nimi Briggs Committee submitted to the Federal Government a draft agreement that was a product of Collective Bargaining.

The Chairman said, “ASUU was taken aback when on Tuesday, 16th of August, 2022, the Minister of Education, representing the Federal Government, abandoned the draft agreement that was a product of Collective Bargaining and offered the Union a “salary award.” This award is unacceptable to ASUU-IMSU.

“After the congress of 23rd August 2022, ASUU-IMSU insists that our conditions of service should be a product of collective bargaining for if it is not a product of collective bargaining, then it is against International Labour Organization regulations.

“Consequently, ASUU-IMSU is resolute that the strike action will continue indefinitely until the government sees reasons to return to the principles of collective bargaining to resolve the outstanding issues with the union. “

91  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Police Kill Edo Kidnapper, Rescue Abducted Woman on: 24-08-2022 10:54 AM

The Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, Jennifer Iwegbu, in a statement on Tuesday, said the rescue operation was successful due to vital information given to the police by the victim’s husband, Aisosa Moses.

A kidnapped woman has been rescued by the Edo State Police Command on Tuesday.

The police also killed a suspect in Uzala Forest, Egba Community, in the Benin area of the state.

The Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, Jennifer Iwegbu, in a statement on Tuesday, said the rescue operation was successful due to vital information given to the police by the victim’s husband, Aisosa Moses.

She said, “The Edo State Police Command in its continuous fight against heinous crimes especially kidnapping, on August 22, 2022, rescued a kidnapped victim.

“This feat was achieved following a complaint by one Mr Aisosa Moses of Ayaen Community, Edo State. He stated that while returning home with his wife and daughter, two hoodlums suspected to be kidnappers ambushed them at the entrance of their house and whisked away his wife into the bush.

“Operatives of the command immediately mobilised and embarked on intensive bush combing for possible arrest of the kidnappers and rescue operation.

“The operatives trailed the kidnappers to their hide-out at Uzala Forest where the suspects, on sighting the team of operatives, attempted to escape through the bush, but the battle-ready and vigilant operatives, neutralised one while the other escaped with gunshot injuries, abandoning the victim who was rescued unhurt.”

Iwegbu said the state Commissioner of Police, Abutu Yaro, urged residents to go about their daily businesses and appealed to them to continue to collaborate with the command to rid criminals and their cohorts in the state.

The association is also proposing the payment of N10, 000 per session for each parent to assist government in making more funds available for universities.

The National Parent-Teacher Association of Nigeria has proferred a solution to end the lingering strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities.

The association has proposed a payment of N10, 000 per session for each parent to assist government in making more funds available for universities.

NAPTAN’s Public Relations Officer, Dr. Ademola Ekundayo, disclosed this during an interview with The PUNCH on Tuesday.

Ekundayo, who lamented continued closure of universities in the country, said parents were at the receiving ends of the disagreement between the Federal Government and ASUU.

He said, “We have submitted a letter to the Office of the Education Minister, seeking for audience where we hope to discuss a proposal.

“We are proposing a sum of N10, 000 per parent every session that will be directly paid to the universities. That will be our own contribution apart from other statutory payments in making more funds available to the universities.

“It can be called parent support levy for universities. We are at the receiving end of the industrial action. We plead with the ASUU and Federal Government to immediately resolve their differences.”

A philanthropist and founder of Opeyemi David Falegan Foundation, Opeyemi Falegan, has called on the past presidents and military rulers to intervene in the lingering ASUU strike.

He also called on the Federal Government and the striking lecturers to consider making necessary sacrifices to end the strike.

The United Kingdom-based Social Democratic Party chieftain made the appeal in a statement made available to journalists in Ado Ekiti on Tuesday titled, “Strike: Nigerian tertiary education system on the verge of total collapse if ASUU strike continues, Falegan warns.”

“The continued industrial action by ASUU may lead to total collapse of tertiary education in Nigeria if the Federal Government and ASUU continue to be flexing muscles. They should sheath their sword in the best interest of hapless Nigerian students and their parents,” Falegan said.

He urged former presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan and as well past military leaders, including  Yakubu Gowon and Abdusalam Abubakar, among others to intervene with a view to making the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), see reason to ensure reopening of the universities.

“We call on well-meaning Nigerians, especially former Heads of State and Presidents to prevail on the current Nigerian leaders to accede to the demands of ASUU to allow the lecturers and students return to the classrooms,” he said.

The Federal University, Dutsin-Ma branch of ASUU has called for total and indefinite strike by union members nationwide if the Federal Government continues to ignore its national headquarters’ demands.

The union took the decision at its congress was held at the institution’s take-off campus in Dutsin-ma on Monday.

98  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / “Your wife is not your relative” – Nigerian man tells married men on: 23-08-2022 05:24 PM

A Nigerian man has sparked reactions after he maintained that a man and his wife are ‘not relatives’.

In a tweet that has generated discussion on the microblogging platform, the young man who goes by the handle Omobobola told married men that their wives are not relatives.

According to him, his father had taught him that if he ever decides to get married and have children, he should never forget that his wife is the only person in his home who is not a relative.

“At the end of the day your wife is not your relative. My father taught me that if I ever get married have kids, I should never forget in my home, my wife is the only one who isn’t my relative. As I grow older, his words become more real”, he tweeted.

His tweet sparked a lot of responses on social media, with many disagreeing with his stance.

A Twitter user @naija_rich_kids wrote,

“Father has already sown the seed of discord even before the marriage occurred. God help us in this marriage thing cos na we human beings dey spoil the thing ourselves.”

@adadike, “Someone you have been sharing your blood with is not your relative? You married her for what then? Should you have married your sister instead? Can you say your mother is not also your relative after all, she came from another blood line?”

@adedyo,

“OF course it’s TRUE. She’s the only alien to any index family.
You share no similarity in Genetic makeup with your wife but with her, you can make offsprings who will be related to you and her, genetically”.

Another Twitter user wrote,

“Mutual held ethical ideology cum bond is as thick as blood. It could even be thicker than blood, depending on the ethical leanings of the blood. So, a good wife (spouse) might not be a relative of her husband, but she’s something equal or even bigger than a relative and, as such, deserves every act of goodness/love from her husband. Don’t try to mend it if it isn’t broken, and if it’s broken, don’t bother to mend it.”
