101  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / US Reveals That Russia Is Planning To Invade and Attack Kyiv In Coming Days on: 23-08-2022 04:50 PM

The U.S. Embassy in Kyiv has warned of an increased possibility of Russian military strikes on Ukraine in the coming days around Ukrainian independence day.

The embassy, again urged U.S. citizens to leave if they could.

“The Department of State has information that Russia is stepping up efforts to launch strikes against Ukraine’s civilian infrastructure and government facilities in the coming days,” the embassy said in an alert on its website.

“The U.S. Embassy urges U.S. citizens to depart Ukraine now using privately available ground transportation options if it is safe to do so,” the alert said, repeating the advice of previous security warnings.

Kyiv has banned public celebrations in the capital on the anniversary of independence from Soviet rule on Wednesday, citing a heightened threat of attack.

Near frontlines in the south of the country, Ukraine said Russia fired rockets into several towns north and west of Europe’s largest nuclear power plant, captured by Russian forces shortly after they invaded Ukraine in February.

Artillery and rocket fire near the Zaporizhzhia nuclear reactor complex, on the south bank of the Dnipro River, led to calls for the area to be demilitarised.

Ukrainians living near the plant voiced fears that shells could hit one of the plant’s six reactors, with potentially disastrous consequences.

“Of course, we are worried. … It’s like sitting on a powder keg,” said Alexander Lifirenko, a resident of the nearby town of Enerhodar, now under control of pro-Moscow forces. (Reuters/NAN)

104  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Why I conferred chieftaincy title on Portable – Onitigbo of Tigbo on: 23-08-2022 04:17 PM

The monarch says people's account of his (Portable's) person differed from what he saw when he met the singer.

The Onitigbo of Tigbo-Ilu Land, in Ota, Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State, Olabode Thomas-Fagbayi, has justified why he conferred a chieftaincy title on the controversial singer, Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, on Monday.

The traditional ruler told PREMIUM TIMES on Tuesday that he honoured the famous Nigerian hip-pop singer with a chieftaincy title over his respectful act.

The monarch added that people’s account of his (Portable’s) person differed from what he saw when he met the singer.

Portable, as fondly called, has shared photos and videos of his coronation as the Amuludun of Tigbo Awori land on social media

The Zazu crooner announced on Monday.

He said he will now be known and addressed as “Chief Amuludun of Tigbo, Aworiland.”

The singer declared that God made it possible for him ever to become a chief.

The ceremony coincided with the annual Tigbo Day, which saw Abass Akande Obesere perform and eulogise Portable at the occasion.

Portable is known for ‘notoriety’ in his words and actions.

Since the conferment of the chieftaincy title, some persons have questioned why the monarch found Portable worthy of the honour.

Justification

The monarch told this newspaper that he never knew the famous artist until recently.

“I visited a school in my domain where I have gotten a report of misbehaviour among the pupils and students of the school. So, I went to the school to talk briefly with them. It was there that I was told that somebody called Portable was passing through my domain and was throwing money at people, and in the process, many got injured.

“Because of that, I summoned him to my palace, and he came twice, but I wasn’t at the palace when he came. So, one day, I was walking on the road, and I saw him driving; I called for him, and he immediately came with his boys, and they all prostrated on the road.”

The monarch also said the singer has his roots in Tigbo town and is well behaved.

“His mum is from Tigbo, and he too lives here; he presented himself as a responsible person, and we take him as that. Some people might have reservations about him, but even at that, he is our son.”

The monarch added that the singer had also shown readiness to be part of the celebration of ‘Tigbo day’.

Mr Thomas-Fagbayi, however, debunked social media claims that he was paid to honour the famous artist and insisted that he is a monarch whom “God has blessed.”

Rights activist Adeniyi Alimi Sulaiman has revealed how Nigerian students should react to the lingering Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) strike.

According to the Centre for Human Rights and Social Justice (CHRSJ) chairman, students should block political campaigns for 2023 general elections.

In a statement on Monday, Sulaman tasked the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) to force the government to resolve its face-off with ASUU.

DailyPost reported that he accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of putting citizens “into the current mess in our educational sector”.

Sulaiman urged ASUU not to bow to President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration in the disagreement over the payment of salaries from February.

He insists the authorities had the funds to offset the arrears but were using political tricks to “bamboozle members of the union”.

Sulaiman lamented that the government has been engaging in “misplaced priorities, including donations to Afghanistan and neighbouring Niger Republic.

“The APC government of President Buhari has failed woefully in the educational sector, this negates their promises on education in both 2015 and 2019 presidential elections.

“It is very bad that the APC government could go about the political activities for 2023 without resolving the burning ASUU strike.

“The ball is in the court of students. The current political leadership does not care because they have all their children trained in foreign land and private universities.

“The future of students has been put in jeopardy; they should do everything possible to put an end to ongoing industrial action,” the statement added.

An update has been given by the police following reports that a man who some people identified as one of the “bishops” who attended the ceremony where Kashim Shettima, vice presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), was beaten and attacked at the Dei-Dei International Building Materials Market in Abuja.

It has now been revealed that the man was not beaten.

A video had circulated online showing the man being surrounded by youths who called him out for being among the 'fake bishops' that attended the unveiling.

Shouts of “fake bishop”, “this is one of the so-called bishops Tinubu used”, among others, are heard in the background of the video.

Many accused supporters of Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) of beating and attacking the man.

It has now been found to be false.

The presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore was among those who accused Obi's supporters of carrying out the attack.

However, when DailyTrust visited the market on Monday, a trader, Hassan Musa, gave a clearer picture of what transpired.

According to Musa, the man was at the market to get plumbing materials when he was recognised and mobbed.

Musa said, “When the story of the fake bishops went viral some weeks ago, people were angry that the APC has taken them for fools. So, when he was recognised as one of the bishops, people started insulting him.

However, he was not touched or beaten. People just gathered round him until the police came and escorted him out of the market.”

Confirming the incident FCT police spokesperson, DSP Josephine Adeh, in a statement, explained how the police rescued the “cleric” and escorted him out of the market.

She identified him as Bishop Hilary C. Okafoh of Madalla, Niger State.

109  Forum / Politics / Those Saying I Installed Buhari Are Talking Rubbish – Soyinka on: 23-08-2022 09:44 AM

The foremost playwright said the accumulation of negativity from the governing and the governed sometimes makes him stay away from commenting on governance.

Nobel Laureate, Prof Wole Soyinka has reacted following accusations that he was among the people that “installed” Muhammadu Buhari as Nigeria’s President in 2015.

In a pre-recorded interview aired on Channels Television on Monday August 22, Soyinka said those claiming he installed Buhari are talking "rubbish."

He said;

“When people talk about Wole Soyinka installing Buhari, they are talking rubbish; they don’t know what they are talking about. They are talking from ignorance. When I think of the governed themselves, I asked myself, ‘What am I doing among these people that they don’t understand that if somebody misrules, you have a right to tell people not to vote for him?’ And it is their business after that who they vote for but they have the option of spoiling their votes.

“So, when I hear Wole Soyinka was the one who installed Buhari and he should apologise to the nation, I say, ‘Your parents should apologise to the world for inflicting morons like you on the world.’”

110  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Police Constable Recruitment Advertised Online Is Fake - IGP Counters PSC on: 23-08-2022 09:40 AM

Spokesperson of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), Muyiwa Adejobi assurred well-meaning Nigerians that the commencement of the 2022 recruitment exercise will be announced via the official police e-recruitment website.

The Nigerian Police has warned applicants to ignore reports that it is recruiting for Constables nationwide.

According to Police, it has not started recruitment for Constables.

This comes after the Police Service Commission had opened its portal for the recruitment of police constable for the year 2022 and placed an advert on the recruitment in a national dailies.

But in response to the development, the Nigeria Police Force urged Nigerians to disregard the advertisement.

This has now ignited another fight between the police and the PSC.

Spokesperson of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), Muyiwa Adejobi assured well-meaning Nigerians that the commencement of the 2022 recruitment exercise will be announced via the official police e-recruitment website.

The statement read;

“The Police similarly states unequivocally that the advert has no connection with the Nigeria Police Force nor is it in tandem with the Police recruitment process, and should be disregarded in its entirety. The website to which the publication refers intending candidates – http://www.recruitment.psc.gov.ng – is not associated with the Nigeria Police Force.

“The Nigeria Police Force hereby calls on all stakeholders and intending applicants to discountenance the information in both the newspaper and on the portal as the website is not the official portal for Police Constables recruitment.

“The Nigeria Police Force thereby assures well-meaning Nigerians that the commencement of the 2022 recruitment exercise will be announced via the official police e-recruitment website – https://policerecruitment.gov.ng, the Nigeria Police Force official website – https://www.npf.gov.ng, and advertisements on national dailies and official police social media accounts as and when due.”

This is not the first time an inspector-general of police will clash with the leadership of the PSC over recruitment of constables.

In 2019, Mohammed Adamu, former IGP, recruited 10,000 constables into the force.

Displeased by the decision of Adamu, the PSC filed a suit against the action of the IGP.

At the federal high court, powers of the IGP to carry out the said recruitment were upheld but the appeal court later ruled that the PSC has the constitutional responsibility of recruiting police constables.

The court of appeal also declared the Police Act 2020, as it affects the constitutional mandate of PSC in terms of recruitment, as illegal.

112  Forum / Politics / Wole Soyinka Reveals Shocking Reason Why APC Lost The Osun Governorship Election on: 23-08-2022 09:35 AM

Nobel laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka has revealed why the All Progressives Congress lost the Osun governorship election.

According to Soyinka, the All Progressives Congress (APC) was punished at the Osun governorship election for committing “sacrilege” against a late former Minister of Justice, Bola Ige.

Ige, who served in the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, was murdered on December 23, 2001.

After his impeachment in 2002, ex-Osun State Governor, Iyiola Omisore was arrested and detained over the assassination, but he denied any involvement.

Speaking in an interview with Channels Television on Monday, Soyinka said it was shocking that the APC could make someone who was implicated in Ige’s murder one of its executives.

“To actually catapult one of those crime suspects and proven contributors, and to find that that person has been given a position in that party (APC), in governance, and after the President (Muhammadu Buhari) had actually inaugurated a re-examination of that episode amongst other crimes, that is quite a bit of shock.

“And I mentioned at a time, that it is a bit of sacrilege. And remember, this Osun is Bola Ige’s State,” Soyinka said.

118  Forum / Education / Buhari And His Govt Notorious For Reneging On Agreements — ASUU on: 22-08-2022 11:24 AM

ASUU also expressed doubt that the Federal Government has the will and capacity to end the crisis between it and the union.

Academic Staff Union of Universities ASUU has accused President Muhammadu Buhari of refusing to fulfill agreement the government signed with the academic union.

The Port Harcourt Zonal Coordinator of ASUU, Stanley Ogoun, in a statement in Port Harcourt, weekend, noted that the Federal Government’s alleged abandonment of draft renegotiated 2009 FGN-ASUU Agreement affirms the doubt regarding the Federal Government’s commitment to ending the current strike.

Ogoun said the union was forced into the present strike on February 14, 2022, based on the refusal of the FG to honour the terms of the agreement, Memorandum of Action, MoA, which led to the conditional suspension of the last strike in December 2020.

He stated that the terms of the 2009 FGN-ASUU Agreement, renegotiation of the agreement has been due since 2012 (10 years ago), but that it took the union several years of concerted efforts to bring Federal Government to the renegotiation table in 2017 with Dr. Wale Babalakin as the leader of the Federal Government’s team.

Ogoun said the Federal Government was not interested in collective bargaining, adding that it was unfortunate and regrettable that the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, whose ineptitude led to and prolonged this avoidable strike could not take proactive steps to prevent the strike.

He said: “Imagine the level of deceitfulness by the minister. A promise to fulfill demands in an election year? We did not embark on strike for over six months geared towards improving our public universities only to come back with mere promissory notes from a government that is notorious for reneging on agreements. I’m sure Nigerians would not forgive us.”
