A 7-year-old boy was killed in a freak elevator accident inside a home his family was renting on North Carolina’s Outer Banks, officials said.

The child was pinned between the elevator car and its shaft on Sunday at about 7 p.m. — hours after the family had arrived for vacation from Canton, Ohio, reports said.

Rescue workers were able to free the child but couldn’t resuscitate him, according to reports.

“It’s such a terrible tragedy,” Chief Rich Shortway, of the Corolla, North Carolina, the fire department told the Washington Post.

The inches-wide gap between the two sets of doors on residential elevators has been a known hazard with deadly results – but a $100 fix could block the gap, the Post said.

At least eight children were killed in “elevator entrapments” between 1981 and 2019, the publication stated, citing federal data and news reports.

A naked woman got wedged between two buildings in California on Tuesday, prompting a bizarre two-hour emergency rescue, reports said.

The unidentified woman is seen in news footage lying on the ground — squeezed into a space about eight inches wide between industrial buildings in the city of Santa Ana.

Only the woman’s skin, back tattoos, and shoes are visible from above looking down into the tight space below.

It isn’t clear how long she was trapped — or how she ended up in the tight spot.

“We’re not 100 percent sure how she got there,” Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Thanh Nguyen told KTLA.

“Right now that’s a mystery to all of us here.”
Rescue workers received the emergency call at around 2 p.m. after workers in the buildings heard panicked calls for help – but at first, no one was sure where the cries were coming from.

“She kept screaming and screaming and screaming,” Jim Kahil, owner of one of the buildings, told CBS LA. Workers eventually looked between the buildings.

The death toll after a mountain cable car plunged to the ground in northern Italy has risen to 14. Two children aged five and nine had earlier been taken to hospital, but one has since died.

A photo of the wreckage taken by Italy’s fire service showed the crushed remains in a clearing among a thick patch of pine trees. Alpine rescue service spokesman Walter Milan said the cable car fell near the summit of the Stresa-Mottarone line in the Piedmont region and was very high off the ground.

It is believed to have happened around 300 metres from the top of the mountain, where the arrival station is. The rescue operation was made more difficult by the fact the car fell in a wooded area.

Grammy-winning singer Billie Eilish has announced the dates for her upcoming world tour in support of her forthcoming album 'Happier Than Ever'. As per Variety, the singer announced on Friday that her long-delayed arena tour will kick off on February 3.

Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo urged citizens of the West African state on Sunday to ignore conspiracy theories surrounding coronavirus vaccines ahead of the launch of its nationwide inoculation campaign against the virus on Tuesday.

“Fellow Ghanaians, I know there are still some who continue to express doubts about the vaccine, others have expressed reservations about its efficacy, with some taking sides with conspiracy theorists who believe the vaccine has been created to wipe out the African race. This is far from the truth,” Akufo-Addo said in a nationwide address on Sunday night.

“Taking the vaccine will not alter your DNA, it will not embed a tracking device in your body, neither will it cause infertility in women or in men,” he said.

Ghana was the first country to receive vaccines as part of the global COVAX scheme aimed at providing poorer nations vaccines to fight the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ahead of the launch of its campaign after receiving 600,000 doses of AstraZeneca shots, health authorities in Ghana, like in other countries, are facing rumours and scepticism about vaccines, driven mostly by mistrust of pharmaceutical companies and other beliefs.

Akufo-Addo added that as president, and to reassure the public that the vaccine is safe, he and the first lady, together with the vice president and second lady, would take the vaccine publicly on Monday.

He said other senior political, religious, judiciary and legislative leaders would take their shots in public on Tuesday.
