North Korea showcased previously unseen intercontinental ballistic missiles at an unprecedented predawn military parade on Saturday that showcased the country’s long-range missiles for the first time in two years.
 
Analysts said the missile, which was shown on a transporter vehicle with 11 axles, would be one of the largest road-mobile intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) in the world if it becomes operational.

Also displayed were the Hwasong-15, which is the longest-range missile ever tested by North Korea, and what appeared to be a new submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM).

Ahead of the parade, which was held to mark the 75th anniversary of the founding of its ruling Workers’ Party, officials in South Korea and the United States said Kim Jong Un could use the event to unveil a new “strategic weapon” as promised earlier this year.

The parade featured North Korea’s ballistic missiles for the first time since Kim began meeting with international leaders, including U.S. President Donald Trump, in 2018.

“We will continue to build our national defence power and self-defensive war deterrence,” Kim said, but vowed that the country’s military power would not be used preemptively. He made no direct mention of the United States or the now-stalled denuclearisation talks.

Kyrgyz security forces detained former president Almazbek Atambayev on Saturday, Russia’s Interfax news agency reported citing a member of Atambayev’s political party.

Atambayev’s supporters had secured his release from prison where he was serving a lengthy sentence on corruption charges amid unrest which toppled the Central Asian nation’s government on Tuesday.

Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force on Friday opened tear gas at protesters in Abuja, the nation’s capital, calling for the scrapping of the Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS), a unit of the force.

Nigerians have expressed anger during the week over the harassment, extortion and extra-judicial killings of innocent Nigerians by SARS operatives by organising various demonstrations across various states in the country.

In a video published online, what seemed to be a peaceful protest in the nation’s capital turned rowdy as police operatives fired tear gas as the protesters approached their line.

This led to protesters scampering for safety and attempting to cover their eyes and noses to prevent the tear gas from having an impact on them.

Republican President Donald Trump on Friday prepared to return to the campaign trail with a pair of weekend rallies after his COVID-19 diagnosis sidelined him for a week in the race against Democratic nominee Joe Biden for the White House.

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern’s party is projected to be one seat short of being able to govern alone, and has a double-digit lead over its rival, with just over a week to the general election, an opinion poll showed on Thursday.

The closely watched 1News-Colmar Brunton poll showed support for Ardern’s Labour party, which is seeking a second term in office, at 47%, unchanged from the last poll on Sept. 28.

Police authorities are not giving listening ear to the call of Nigeria citizen for the scrapping of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

The police Public Relations Officer at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, Frank Mba, said SARS cannot be scrapped because it is still needed to combat armed robbery and other violent crimes across the country.

Mexican scientist Mario Molina, who became his country’s first winner of the Nobel Prize for Chemistry for his work on the threat to the ozone layer from chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), died on Wednesday at the age of 77.
 
One of Mexico’s most eminent scientists, Molina conducted some of his first experiments at a tender age in his childhood home before becoming a global authority on climate change.

The Centro Mario Molina, an environmental research body he founded, said he died of “unexpected cardiac problems”.
